At this point in the offseason, it appears that the Minnesota Twins are all but done with their offseason acquisitions. That being said, Terry Ryan made it known that the club may not be quite done yet. In an interview with KSTP’s Chris Long, the Twins general manager had some interesting, and intriguing quotes.

When Long asked Terry Ryan if he was in contact with Max Scherzer or James Shields people, and whether or not it was a realistic situation, Terry Ryan responded “It’s not much different from the Kendrys Morales situation” he went on to say that the club is keeping tabs on both pitchers, even if it remains a little bit outside of the realm of possibility right now.
Here’s the deal though, it’s nothing like the Kendrys Morales situation. Sure, if the Twins were to sign either Shields or Scherzer yet this offseason, the move would come from absolutely nowhere and be out of left field. That’s where the comparison ends however. Morales was a marginal hitter at best, and provided next to no value for a Twins team that looked ever so briefly like they were going to contend. The Twins with Scherzer or Shields in their rotation immediately become a top three team in the AL Central standings, with the ability to push for a Wild Card spot.
To be fair, the most telling quote was likely that the signing of either pitcher remains a little bit outside of the realm of possibility. Let’s face it, though the Twins have the money to do so, they aren’t going to overpay the Red Sox, Yankees, or Cardinals should any of those teams desire one of the two top arms. As Darren Wolfson tweeted, the idea is unrealistic, but it’s good Ryan knows not to turn a complete blind eye.
Also noted in the interview was the acquisition of Tim Stauffer, and the pitching flexibility he brings to the team. Ryan talked about how new manager Paul Molitor will put his own spin on Spring Training, and Chris Long made sure to get some face time with Molitor as well. Check out the full interview here.
The Twins Caravan continues to roll on throughout Minnesota and surrounding states, so there could be more interesting quotes still to come.
