Twins should respond to Guardians' Travis Bazzana call-up by promoting this top prospect

The Twins' division rival, the Cleveland Guardians, have promoted their top prospect to the big leagues. Minnesota should respond by recalling a power-hitting outfielder.

The Guardians are promoting their top prospect, second baseman Travis Bazzana, to the majors, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Minnesota should be inspired by Cleveland's decision to select Bazzana's contract and promote one of its own top prospects, outfielder Emmanuel Rodríguez. With Twins outfielder Matt Wallner struggling significantly this season, Minnesota should consider optioning Wallner to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Rodríguez.

The Guardians have a 15-15 record despite a -9 run differential with an offense that ranks 21st among the 30 MLB teams in runs (120) and OPS (.694). Bazzana, who has a .287/.422/.511 slash line in 24 games with Triple-A Columbus this year, could give Cleveland the offensive boost it desperately needs.

Even though the Twins (13-16) rank in the top half of the league in OPS and runs, they could also use an offensive boost. Luke Keaschall, Royce Lewis, Matt Wallner, Kody Clemens, Victor Caratini and Josh Bell have all been below-average hitters this year per OPS+. Rodríguez, FanSided's No. 66 overall prospect, could provide a much-needed jolt to the Twins' lineup. Rodríguez, 23, is slashing .239/.409/.451 with four homers, three doubles, 14 RBI and three stolen bases with Triple-A St. Paul this season.

Rodríguez could provide much-needed jolt to Twins' offense

As stated earlier, the obvious player for the Twins to demote in the event they recall Rodríguez is Wallner, as Rodríguez could take his spot as Minnesota's primary right fielder. The Twins should only promote Rodríguez if they plan to use him in the starting lineup regularly. Minnesota could also consider promoting outfielder Kyler Fedko, who has an .808 OPS with the Saints this year, as a corresponding move to optioning Wallner if the team wants to give outfielders Austin Martin (.955 OPS) and Trevor Larnach (.815 OPS) more playing time. Fedko, a right-handed hitter who has mashed lefties this season, could serve in a platoon role for Minnesota. But if the Twins are serious about doing whatever it takes to win as many games as possible, the team should recall Rodríguez and demote Wallner, who is hitting .172/.274/.290 (56 OPS+) with -4 Defensive Runs Saved in 26 games this season.

Twins top prospects Walker Jenkins, FanSided's No. 9 overall prospect, and Kaelen Culpepper, FanSided's No. 65 overall prospect, should also make their MLB debuts this season. However, keeping them in Triple-A for now is likely in the Twins' best interest, as Jenkins has a .637 OPS this year and Culpepper has a .699 OPS. Meanwhile, Rodríguez is clearly ready to make the jump to the big leagues.
