FT. MYERS, FL - FEBRUARY 21: Ryan LaMarre

The Minnesota Twins had some quality non-roster invites in Spring camp this year. One player has stood out above the rest, and may have proven enough to receive an opportunity during the 2018 season.

Ryan Lamarre has been tearing the cover off of the baseball for the Minnesota Twins this Spring. He signed with the Twins in December as organizational depth for the coming season. However, he may have played himself into a larger role.

Lamarre is hitting .500 with five extra base hits and 10 runs batted in with 30 plate appearances this Spring. He has yet to get a real opportunity at the Major League level. However, if he keeps this up his chance will be coming soon.

What to expect from Lamarre in 2018

The Minnesota Twins have all three starting outfielders from last season returning for the ’18 season. That will make it hard for Lamarre to see any consistent playing time. However, injuries are inevitable and Lamarre will be a top option when that happens.

Zack Granite is battling Lamarre for that opportunity, and Granite has the potential to be really good. However, one player that should not hamper Lamarre’s chances of making the roster is Robbie Grossman.

Grossman is a below-average outfielder and will hurt this defense more than help if he’s thrust into playing time. At best, Grossman should be there to DH when Logan Morrison is needed at first base. That leaves Lamarre as the Twins fourth outfielder this season.

Lamarre could be a great late-inning pinch runner/defensive replacement for the Minnesota Twins during the ’18 season. However, he is likely to open up the season in Triple-A but will see time in the Majors at some point.
