The Minnesota Twins have a lot of international money available to use. As other teams use their international money, why aren’t the Twins spending theirs?

The Minnesota Twins entered the offseason with the third highest amount of money to spend on international free agents, trailing only the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. That money has everyone waiting for the team to do something with those funds. It seems waiting is what we will continue to do.

As the waiting continues, opportunities to spend those international monies become fewer and fewer. The first opportunity was eliminated when Shohei Ohtani informed the Twins that they would not become one of the finalists in his posting sweepstakes. Now that doesn’t qualify as the Twins not doing something, but Ohtani’s decision came with the assumption the Twins would start moving on some other international free agents.

The attention than naturally turned to a crop of ex-Atlanta Braves free agents who now find themselves as free agents. On Tuesday we started to see some of those players sign with teams. Kevin Maitan ($2.2 million) and Livan Soto ($850,000) both signed with the Los Angeles Angels as they try to improve their weak farm system. Yefri del Rosario ($650,000) signed with the Kansas City Royals and the Philadelphia Phillies signed Abrahan Gutierrez ($550,000).

This left many following the Twins offseason asking, “What are the Twins doing?” As each ex-Brave looks like another missed opportunity. Let’s try to answer that exact question, what might the Twins be planning to do?

More from Minnesota Twins News

There are still eight other players who have been released from the Braves organization that could still be on the Twins radar. Darren Wolfson also tweeted that the Twins have interest in bringing back into their organization one of their own former international signings in Jelfry Marte. It may be hard from Marte’s side to sign back with a team that just took $3 million from you, but it isn’t out of the question.

A look back at Wolfson’s twitter account lets us know that the Twins will also be present at Cuban outfielder Julio Pablo Martinez‘s showcase this coming Friday. Martinez would still be a quality signing and has the potential to have one of the earliest impacts on the majors. International money can still be used for the next 6 months, so it could very much be in play as a trade chip in any of the rumored trade targets of the Twins as well.
