The Minnesota Twins give another shot to Kennys Vargas as they look for him to provide some boost to an inconsistent lineup.
With inconsistent production from the Minnesota Twins offense they will look to shake things up. Kennys Vargas is a switch-hitting first basemen/designated hitter, but his fielding is sub par so he was brought up mainly to bolster run scoring. Throughout his major league career he has appeared in 82 games as a designated hitter and 64 as a first baseman.
Vargas had a slow spring training causing him to not make the 25-man roster. Byung Ho Park had a stellar spring training but the Twins decided he needed more time in Triple A. With Park not being on the 40-man roster (along with the disabled list) the Twins brought up Vargas.
Vargas’ career numbers are .250/.310/.433 with 24 home runs, 71 runs scored and 75 RBIs in just under a full season of games. This season in Triple A with the Rochester Red Wings, he hit .227/.346/.432 while Park was batting .375 before heading to the 7-day disabled list.

Vargas could also provide more offensive boost than Joe Mauer. Mauer is batting .222/.269/.254 with two doubles and six RBIs in 17 games. Kennys has a double, a triple, and two home runs to go along with ten RBIs in twelve games at Triple A.
In 47 games with the Twins last year, Vargas had 10 home runs and 20 RBIs. He averaged a homer every 15.2 at-bats. Let’s hope he can bring some of that power to the major league level. Joe Mauer averaged a home run once every 45 at bats last year at a position known for power hitters.

Kennys Vargas provides a bat that can help the Twins get more consistent power. The Twins will hope that, in turn, it can provide more run support for a pitching staff that has been mildly surprising.
