Twins RHP Joe Ryan scratched from scheduled start
Joe Ryan was originally scheduled to start in the series finale against the Athletics on Sunday but will now pitch in the upcoming series vs. the Kansas City Royals due to arm fatigue. The three-game set between the two American League Central rivals will begin on Tuesday.
Twins LHP Connor Prielipp reinstated from IL
Left-hander Connor Prielipp has been activated from the injured list and will make the start on Sunday, according to AaronGleeman.com's Aaron Gleeman. Prielipp, who is 2-5 with a 5.00 ERA and 71 strikeouts over 66 2/3 innings this year, had been on the injured list since July 9 with a left middle finger blister.
Twins RHP Mike Paredes scratched from scheduled start
Ryan isn't the only Twins pitcher to be scratched during the A's series, as Minnesota scratched Mike Paredes, who is 0-3 with a 4.72 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings this season, from his scheduled start on Saturday and placed him on the injured list with an oblique strain on Sunday. Left-hander Kendry Rojas made the start instead and allowed just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in four scoreless innings as the Twins earned a much-needed 2-0 victory.
Twins activate RHP Cole Sands from IL
Minnesota also activated right-hander Cole Sands from the injured list and optioned right-hander Jack Anderson, whom the Twins claimed off waivers from the Boston Red Sox earlier this month, to Triple-A St. Paul. Anderson has thrown 3 1/3 scoreless innings with four strikeouts across three appearances for the Twins this year.
The Twins placed Sands on the IL in early May due to a right forearm strain. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul in early June, but Minnesota stopped it because he didn't feel 100%. Sands began another rehab assignment with the Saints on July 7 before being reinstated on Sunday.
In 11 2/3 innings across 12 appearances with the Twins this year, Sands has a 4.63 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and 11 strikeouts.
Twins to take on Athletics for series finale Sunday
The series finale of the three-game set between the Twins and Athletics at Target Field is scheduled to begin at 1:10 p.m. CDT on Sunday. Left-hander Jeffrey Springs (3-9, 5.96 ERA, 86 SO, 102 2/3 IP) is slated to start for the Athletics. Fans can stream the game on Twins.TV.
