Twins CF Byron Buxton confirms he will undergo offseason hip surgery

Late last month, Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll said offseason surgery was a potential option for Buxton, whom Minnesota placed on the injured list with a right hip impingement last Sunday. On Friday, Buxton told The Minnesota Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale he will undergo offseason surgery. He is still attempting to return before the end of this season.

“Yeah, unfortunately, I know I’m going to have to get [surgery] done at some point,” Buxton said. “I’m going to go until it sparks me up again. Then I’ll know, ‘All right, it’s time, bro.’ Until then, I’m just going to keep fighting.”

Buxton has been on the injured list three times since early July due to his hip problem. Before his first IL stint, Buxton hit .271/.328/.575 (148 wRC+) with 25 home runs, 16 doubles and 45 RBI over 335 plate appearances. Since his first IL stint, he has slashed a rough .172/.274/.203 (38 wRC+) with no home runs, two doubles and one RBI over 73 plate appearances.

If the Twins fall out of postseason contention within the next couple of weeks, there would be no reason for Buxton to return this year. But if Minnesota stays in the race, Buxton would have a much better chance of being reinstated from the IL. With the Twins sitting 4 1/2 games out of the final Wild Card spot, it appears likely that Minnesota will shut Buxton down for the rest of the season.

Twins RHP Joe Ryan set to throw bullpen session Saturday

Joe Ryan is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Chicago on Saturday, according to John Shipley of the Pioneer Press. If the bullpen session goes well, Ryan could return to the rotation as soon as next week.

The Twins placed Ryan on the injured list with a left glute strain on Aug. 7. The right-hander carried a 2.85 ERA into the All-Star break. After the break, Ryan raised his ERA to 3.65 by allowing 16 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings across three starts before being placed on the IL.

Ryan made a rehab start with Triple-A St. Paul earlier this week. He allowed one earned run on one hit (home run) and no walks while recording four strikeouts over three innings. He threw 42 pitches. His fastball averaged 91.4 mph and topped out at 92.6 mph.
