Twins CF Byron Buxton day-to-day with hip issue
Byron Buxton was out of the Twins' lineup for the third straight game on Saturday afternoon. The star center fielder exited Tuesday's loss to the Athletics in Sacramento, Calif., early due to hip discomfort.
Buxton has already been on the injured list twice this season due to his hip issue. When news broke that the Twins were promoting top prospect Walker Jenkins for his MLB debut on Friday, many assumed that another Buxton IL stint would be the corresponding move. Instead, the Twins optioned outfielder Alan Roden to Triple-A St. Paul.
Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll said that Buxton is day-to-day at this point, according to MLB.com's Theodore Tollefson.
“We're going to see if we can get [Buxton] through this next stretch and back on the field one more time,” Zoll said. “But really just day to day at this point and need to see how he continues to progress."
Zoll said an IL stint is still in the cards for Buxton. The GM added that offseason surgery is a "potential option."
Buxton has had a strong season, slashing .254/.319/.511 with 25 home runs. However, he has hit just .172/.274/.203 with no home runs in 73 plate appearances since he landed on the IL for the first time on July 7. Minnesota activated Buxton from the IL on July 20, then put him back on the IL on July 29. The Twins activated Buxton from his second IL stint on Aug. 13.
Twins RHP Joe Ryan nearing minor-league rehab stint
Ryan, who landed on the IL on Aug. 5 due to a left glute strain, said he's been feeling good since he threw live batting practice at CHS Field in St. Paul on Wednesday afternoon, according to Tollefson.
“I think just facing hitters was the biggest one, right?” Ryan said. “It’s just, I haven’t done that in a second, and then I haven’t really done that feeling like I have control over my body and not compensating for a couple, a little bit longer than that. So good to just get out there and feel a little bit more free.”
Zoll said he expects Ryan to begin a rehab assignment next week with Triple-A St. Paul if his scheduled bullpen on Sunday goes well.
Ryan has posted a 3.65 ERA with 138 strikeouts in 125 2/3 innings across 23 starts this season.
Ryan entered the All-Star Break with a 2.85 ERA. He had three disastrous starts after the break, allowing 16 earned runs over 15 1/3 innings before being placed on the IL.
