The Minnesota Twins' playoff hopes are pretty much dead at this point, but the team just gave fans a reason to keep tuning into games for the rest of the season. On Saturday, the Twins announced they promoted top outfield prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez for his MLB debut. Minnesota optioned utilityman Ben Ross as a corresponding move.

At this point, the Twins clearly are planning to let the kids play. After losing 5-2 to the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night, Minnesota fell to nine games below .500 and 5 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the final American League Wild Card spot. With just 15 regular-season games, it'd take a miracle for the Twins to reach the postseason.
But that doesn't mean Twins fans should stop watching games. Walker Jenkins, Kaelen Culpepper and Rodriguez should be in the lineup for the rest of the season. While it'd be much more fun if the Twins were still in the thick of the playoff race, it's still worth watching the development of Minnesota's young, promising players. Trevor Larnach and Josh Bell will likely see their playing time decrease.
Twins' Emmanuel Rodriguez has tons of potential
Rodriguez, 23, is the Twins' No. 5 overall prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The outfielder ranked as Minnesota's No. 2 overall prospect last year. His ranking dropped because of multiple injuries and the resurgence of other prospects such as Culpepper, Marek Houston and Vahn Lackey.
Rodriguez missed over three months this season due to a thumb injury that required surgery. He's put up strong numbers when healthy this year, slashing .262/.414/.500 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI over 49 games. Since making his professional debut in 2021, Rodriguez has posted a slash line of .257/.424/.489 with 61 home runs and 197 RBI over 353 games. Rodriguez strikes out a lot, but he's improved in that aspect of his game lately, going from a 31.6% strikeout rate over 52 Triple-A games last year to a 26.5% strikeout rate in 48 Triple-A games this season.
As for his defense, Rodriguez is a solid defender who can play all three outfield positions. He will likely play corner outfield with the Twins. He's a slightly above-average runner and has a plus arm as well.
Fans can watch Rodriguez's MLB debut against the Guardians on Saturday afternoon at Target Field, assuming the outfielder is in the lineup. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:10 p.m. CDT and will be available to stream on Twins.TV.
