Twins fans shocked to see Vance Worley pitch for Great Britain vs. USA in WBC matchup last night

Minnesota Twins fans couldn't believe what they were watching when former Twins pitcher Vance Worley took the mound for Great Britain against Team USA in a Pool B World Baseball Classic (WBC) matchup at Daikin Park in Houston last night.

As expected, Team USA absolutely dominated Great Britain, which led the USA 1-0 before a five-run fifth inning from the United States highlighted by a two-run homer from designated hitter Kyle Schwarber. USA tacked on three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh en route to a 9-1 victory. Tarik Skubal made the start for the USA, allowing one run in three innings.

Worley entered the game in the seventh inning. All things considered, Worley was relatively successful, allowing just one run over two innings on three hits and two walks with a strikeout of Cubs star Pete-Crow Armstrong. Not bad for a guy who hasn't been in the big leagues in nearly a decade and facing arguably the best lineup in WBC history.

Worley, 38, made 10 starts for Minnesota in 2013 after the Phillies traded him and right-handed pitcher Trevor May to the Twins in exchange for outfielder Ben Revere.

Worley was a massive disappointment for the Twins, posting an awful 7.21 ERA in 48 2/3 innings across his 10 starts before being demoted to Triple-A Rochester in May 2013. He spent the remainder of the 2013 season in Triple-A before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash on March 25, 2014. He pitched for Pittsburgh from 2014 to 2015 before playing for the Baltimore Orioles in 2016 and the Miami Marlins in 2017, the righty's last season in the big leagues.

Worley clearly has a deep passion for baseball to still be pitching despite his MLB career ending long ago. Even though Worley's tenure with Minnesota went poorly, it was still fun for Twins fans to see the righty take on the star-studded USA lineup.

Great Britain fell to 0-2 in pool play with its loss against the USA after dropping its first pool-play game to Mexico, 8-2. Worley and his team won't make it to the quarterfinals, barring a miracle, and would be eliminated with a loss to Italy today.

As for the USA, the nation moved to 2-0 with its victory against Great Britain after beating Brazil 15-5 on Friday. Team USA will play Mexico at 7:00 p.m. CST on Monday and Italy at 8:00 p.m. CST on Tuesday. The USA is favored to win its next two matchups, but Italy and Mexico are expected to be much tougher competition than Brazil and Great Britain.

Two teams from Team USA's pool (B) will advance to the quarterfinals. If Team USA advances, the nation will play Pool A's first or second-place team at Daikin Park on Friday, March 13. The Semifinals will take place at LoanDepot Park in Miami on March 15 & 16, and the championship will also be at LoanDepot Park on March 17.
