Rangers have a lot at stake against the Twins this weekend
After defeating the New York Mets 3-1 on Thursday afternoon, the Rangers moved into sole possession of first place in the American League West with a half-game lead over the Houston Astros, who will begin a four-game series against the Athletics in Sacramento, Calif., on Thursday night. There's a good chance the winner of the AL West will have a sub-.500 record, as the Rangers are 79-80 and the Astros are 78-80.
The Astros have a major advantage over the Rangers, as they hold the tiebreaker because of their head-to-head record. Therefore, the Rangers must finish with a better record than the Astros to win the AL West. Technically, the Rangers could also be the final Wild Card team if they sweep the Twins, the Cleveland Guardians lose the rest of their regular-season games, and the Astros sweep the Athletics.
It'll be refreshing to see the Twins play some games that matter after they played two bottom-dwelling teams: the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants.
On one hand, it would be fun to see the Twins win this weekend, because, well, we're Twins fans. However, we may actually want Minnesota to lose. The Twins have a chance to earn a top-6 draft pick for 2027. The more games they lose, the better chance they have of earning a better pick. Minnesota has a 15.7% chance to earn a top-6 pick and a 1.62% chance to get the No. 1 overall pick, according to Tankathon.
At the same time, we want to see the Twins' best players perform well and end the season on a strong note. No matter what, the final series of the season should be fun to watch.
