Saturday’s Twins-Red Sox game postponed due to bad weather: Full details and makeup date
Saturday’s game will not start on time thanks to severe weather rolling through the Boston area.
UPDATE: Today’s game has been postponed and will be played as part of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. This doesn’t really impact anything with the Red Sox catching the Twins, though, as Minnesota owns the tiebreaker and can afford to lose the doubleheader and not lose ground against Boston. The Twins would, however, hurt themselves in the Wild Card standings so the outcome of Suhday’s doubleheader is rather significant.
After what was easily the roughest stretch of the season for the Minnesota Twins, things finally looked like they were about to get back on track just in time.
There’s a good chance that still happens, but a rain delay on Saturday afternoon will push any sort of momentum Minnesota was building back a bit. Bad weather rolled through the Boston area, forcing the tarp to come out at Fenway Park and the first pitch to be pushed back.
It’s not the first time this season the Twins have been forced to delay the start of a game, but this time around there’s more anxiety than there’s ever been.
Latest Twins vs. Red Sox rain delay updates (September 21, 2024)
There wasn’t an immediate restart time announced, but the expectation is that the game will get underway within the next hour or so. The good news is that first pitch was scheduled for 4:10 pm ET, which means there’s a ton of wiggle room as far as being able to still play the game today and not have to do a doubleheader on Sunday.
Editor’s Note: Literally ten minutes after writing this the game way postponed until Sunday. So much for that prediction!
It’s not a game that matters in terms of the Twins and Red Sox fighting for a Wild Card spot. With the win on Friday, Minnesota clinched the tiebreaker over Boston and will have the edge in the event the Red Sox surge back into the picture — which seems unlikely given how this series has started.
The Twins finally started to hopefully started to pull themselves out of a deep pit they’ve fallen in over the last month. Minnesota lost 20 of their last 30 games coming into this weekend’s series against the Red Sox, but ended that on Friday with a huge win in extra innings.
It was a marathon 12 innings that the Twins needed to get the victory, but the way the team won is what the real takeaway is. Minnesota’s bullpen has been in the dumps, sinking to one of the worst units in the league and posting an embarassing 5.64 ERA since August 18th.
Tht wasn’t the case on Friday, with Louie Varland helping lead the way to seven scoreless innings in which only five hits were allowed. The win was coupled with losses by the Tigers and Royals, which means despite how bad things have been, Minnesota gained ground int eh Wild Card standings.
