With just 35 games left on the schedule, the Minnesota Twins have plenty of time to make their move and take over the AL Central.
Cleveland's lead over the Twins has shrunk considerably from where it was earlier in the season, with Minnesota sitting just two whole games behind the Guardians. Kansas City is right in the thick of things too, as it's gearing up to be an intense three horse sprint to the finish line next month.
The Twins have a critical four-game series against the Guardians in the middle of September, but until then they'll need to carefully take things one game at a time. That's not exactly what has happened over the last few games, as Minnesota blew a late lead twice in three days and are 1-3 in their last four games.
Despite this, they can begin next week in first place if the Texas Rangers can give them an assist against the Guardians this weekend. Of course, that would also mean the Twins need to take care os business against the St. Louis Cardinals.
What channel is the Twins game on tonight? How to watch
Last weekend the Twins needed to stay sharp against a Texas team fighting for its postseason life, and the same goes for the matchup against St. Louis. The Cardinals are 10 games out of first place in the NL Central, but are just five games out of the Wild Card.
While Minnesota can use a big weekend to close the gap and potentially overtake Cleveland, the Cardinals need it almost worse considering they're on the outside of the playoff bubble peering in.
