Injuries and inconsistency have led to a decline in the Twins' postseason chances
As the 2025 season turns just past the halfway mark, the Minnesota Twins find themselves slipping further from playoff contention. What began as a promising June, has quickly unraveled due to a wave of injuries, inconsistent offensive production, and a crowded American League wild card race. With each passing week, the path to the postseason becomes more difficult to navigate.
The most glaring concern is the state of the Twins’ pitching staff. Injuries have decimated what was once a solid rotation. Pablo López, the team’s ace and tone-setter on the mound, is now sidelined with an injury that could linger into the final stretch of the season. Bailey Ober, who provided reliable depth behind López, is also on the injured list, weakening the back end of the rotation. And the setback to top prospect Zebby Matthews, whose potential call-up was viewed as a much-needed boost. With three key arms unavailable, the Twins are forced to patch together starts with untested pitchers and overwork relievers, an unsustainable approach in the thick of a playoff race.
The offense hasn’t helped ease the pressure. The Twins’ bats have been wildly inconsistent, alternating between brief explosions and prolonged scoring droughts. They struggle to produce with runners in scoring position and often fail to capitalize on key opportunities. Slumps from key hitters and a lack of power outside of a few streaky contributors have led to extended stretches of stagnant offense. In a league where timely hitting is essential, the Twins have come up short too often.
Making matters worse is the sheer number of teams they now have to leapfrog. The Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, and even the Los Angeles Angels are all in the thick of the wild card hunt—and currently ahead of Minnesota in the standings. These teams have either surged with strong pitching or have caught fire offensively at the right time, while the Twins have stumbled. The longer Minnesota remains in this inconsistent state, the less likely it becomes they’ll be able to close the gap.
Simply put, the Twins are trending in the wrong direction. Injuries, inconsistency, and stiff competition have created a playoff puzzle that’s looking harder to solve each day. Without a quick turnaround, Minnesota’s October dreams may soon be out of reach.
