The 2025 Major League Baseball Draft opens on Sunday night, with the first three rounds set to be completed. Included in the selections made on Sunday night will be the picks within the compensation, prospect incentive, and competitive balance rounds. Credit to Major League Baseball for stepping up their coverage of the draft, as a portion of Sunday night's selections can be seen on both ESPN and MLB Network.
The draft should signal what should be an important few weeks for the Minnesota Twins to close out the month of July. The Twins are inching closer to being sellers at the trade deadline, and if they are, it's possible the front office can use the draft to begin preparing for replacing the talent that will be traded away from the Major League roster.
Along those lines, it will be interesting to see how aggressive the Twins are with their first-round selection. Despite the lingering sale of the franchise, it would seem that Derek Falvey and Rocco Baldelli will both be back for the 2026 season. In recent seasons, the moves made by the Twins' front office would suggest they are kind of stuck in limbo as the ownership situation continues without resolution. Knowing that they likely won't make any trade that moves the needle significantly in either direction, the Twins' front office could look for a high-ceiling prospect in the first round.

Recent mock drafts have pointed the Twins in the direction of college bats. Specifically, infielders who offer versatility and can play multiple positions. Under their current regime, versatility among their position players has been a preference for their roster construction. Short of a pitcher falling to the Twins at No. 16, it would be a safe bet that the Twins will target a college bat who can ascend through the system quickly.
