The Minnesota Twins aren't out of the Wild-Card conversation, entering the weekend only 4 games out of the final spot in the American League, but it would seem that teams expect them to become sellers ahead of the MLB trade deadline.
While it remains unlikely that Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan will be traded at the deadline, it could be open season on the rest of the Twins' roster. As the Twins return from the All-Star break, that reality could mean several players are on their last chance with the team.
Twins’ second half could spell the end for these 4 players
- Chris Paddack
The Twins are likely hoping that a contender takes Chris Paddack off their hands ahead of the deadline. In the final year of a three-year contract, Paddack has struggled to the tune of a 4.95 ERA in 19 starts. There likely is little interest in the Twins in bringing him back after this season, and a contender likely will take a chance on the veteran.
- Jose Miranda
It's been an ugly season for Jose Miranda, and one that may have derailed his long-term future with the Twins. Miranda hit .167 with a wRC+ of 8 before a base-running blunder had him optioned to the minors early in the season. Since then, Miranda hasn't made a strong case for his return, hitting under .200 with a wRC+ of 46 at the Triple-A level this season. Short of a regime change, Miranda may be out of favor with this Twins team.
- Kody Funderburk
After posting a 6.49 ERA in 27 appearances last season, Kody Funderburk has been just as bad this season, posting a 6.92 ERA in 10 appearances. If the Twins add Major League-ready arms at the deadline, Funderburk is a clear candidate to be designated for assignment. His value with the Twins has been all but lost.
- Christian Vazquez
It hasn't been a great season for Christian Vazquez, hitting .170 through 162 plate appearances, but he has postseason experience and a pitch-framing pedigree that could have contenders intrigued. Teams like the Boston Red Sox and San Diego Padres could be interested in Vazquez ahead of the deadline, hoping that a change-of-scenery provides a spark for the veteran.
