While Byron Buxton made it clear that he won't be traded at the MLB trade deadline, Minnesota Twins' President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey didn't exactly close the door on the idea of the Twins moving surprise names at the deadline. All-Star starting pitcher Joe Ryan has been one player speculated to be on the block, and Falvey did little to silence the noise while speaking with Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Twins baseball prez Derek Falvey talks here about whether Joe Ryan could be available. Falvey hits on Correa, Buxton, Lewis, Duran and more. Joel and I debate an All-Star pick.

There's still a sizable gap between the Twins simply listening to offers for Ryan and deciding to move the 29-year-old starting pitcher who is under team control until 2028. At a deadline where there are few defined sellers and a need for pitchers across the board for contending teams, the Twins would be in a position to get a haul of prospects if they were to make Ryan available.
Trading Ryan would signal that the Twins aren't just kicking the can on the remainder of the 2025 season; they would be doing so for the 2026 season as well. That's a strategy that hasn't been present within the Twins' front office in recent memory. Despite leaving the door open, it still feels unlikely that Ryan is moved.

While that may be the case for Ryan, there appear to be growing chances that the Twins will move Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran. The high-leverage relief pitchers are each under control until 2028, and unlike Ryan, a case can be made that the Twins could move each at the deadline while still maintaining the hope of contending in 2026. Especially when you factor in that the Twins would likely get Major League-ready talent in each potential trade.
One thing is clear: there's been a change in tune from Falvey. In the weeks before the All-Star break, Falvey wasn't ready to give the impression that the Twins would sell at the deadline. Now, it seems that the Twins are open for business, and any non-Buxton player could be on the move.
