Minnesota Twins Daily Dip, July 14th, 2017

Minnesota Twins off for All-Star break

July 14th Probable Starter: Jose Berrios @ Houston Astros 7:10PM CT

Lehigh Valley IronPigs 6, Rochester Red Wings 1

Bartolo Colon’s Twins organization system debut did not go well. Colon went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 5. His stuff did not have great movement, and he topped out at 89 MPH. Mitch Garver had a solid game, with a double, single, and a walk. Tommy Field added a double and a walk.

July 14th Probable Starter: Justin Haley @ Lehigh Valley, 6:05PM CT

Chattanooga Lookouts 5, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 4

Down 4-3 going into the bottom of the 9th, the Lookouts scored two to walk off with the victory. Stephen Gonsalves was stung by his defense, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs, but only one earned, on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 9. Jonathan Rodriguez and T.J. White both had a pair of doubles, though White also added 3 errors.

July 14th Probable Starter: Kohl Stewart vs. Jacksonville, 6:15PM CT

Fort Myers Miracle 4, Charlotte Stone Crabs 3 (Game 1); Fort Myers Miracle 5, Charlotte Stone Crabs 3 (Game 2)

The Miracle slept a double header on Thursday. In game 1, Lewis Thorpe got roughed up a tough in his four innings, but the bullpen locked down as the Miracle came back to win the game. Thorpe went 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, striking out 3. Tanner English had a single, two walks, and a stolen base. Mitchell Kranson had a double and a walk.

Brady Anderson had a solid start in game 2, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 2. Andrew Vasquez closed out the game with two scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and no walks, striking out 5. Sean Miller had a big game with three hits, including a double. Tanner English had a pair of hits, including a triple, and added a stolen base.

Game 2 TBD

West Michigan Whitecaps 2, Cedar Rapids Kernels 0

Cedar Rapids had a pair of runs in the top of the 6th that held up as the lead until the bottom of the 8th inning and then lost the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. Evan Sanders made the start, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing a run on 5 hits and 3 walks, striking out 1. Gorge Munoz hit a home run and walked. Trey Cabbage had a double.

July 14th Probable Starter: Clark Beeker @ West Michigan, 6:00PM CT

Elizabethton Twins 9, Burlington Royals 3

The Twins jumped out with 6 runs in the first two innings, and they never looked back as they trounced the Royals on Wednesday. Moises Gomez scattered Royals hits all night long, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits and no walks, striking out 4. Rickey Ramirez followed with 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just a hit and striking out 2. Brent Rooker hit his 6th home run and stole a base on the night. Jose Miranda added a home run. Ariel Montesino and Mark Contreras each had a pair of hits and a walk.

July 14th Probable Starter: Charlie Barnes @ Burlington, 6:00PM CT

GCL Orioles 9, GCL Twins 5

After the 14-0 lashing by the Twins on Wednesday, the Orioles bounced back with a win on Thursday behind a 5-run 5th inning. Pedro Garcia made the start, throwing 4 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 3. Roni Tapia had a pair of doubles. Emmanuel Morel had a pair of singles and was hit by pitch. Benjamin Rodriguez had a double, a walk, and was hit by pitch.

July 14th Opponent: vs. Red Sox 11:00AM CT

DSL Phillies Red 6, DSL Twins 1

The Twins struck first, but the Phillies Red squad came out on top by scoring in 3 innings, including a 4-run 6th inning. Andriu Marin got the start and threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and no walks, striking out 3. Alberoni Nunez and Juan Martinez each had a pair of hits.

One Last Thing

His first start in the Twins organization brought to light the career of Bartolo Colon. Colon has thrown an even 150 innings against the Minnesota Twins in his career, posting an 11-8 record with a 3.78 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a 54/124 BB/K ratio.
