The Minnesota Twins have reportedly called up top prospect Jose Berrios

According to a source of Twins’ blogger Ted Schwerzler, and confirmed by Mike Berardino, the Minnesota Twins have called up Jose Berrios.

Berrios is set to join the team in Minnesota today. He’s set to make his debut on Wednesday against the Indians. It is unknown at the moment who he’ll replace in the rotation.

Jose was not on the 40 man roster but the Twins do have an open space due to losing John Hicks on waivers. This recall of Berrios smooths over the gaffe management made in outrighting Hicks prematurely.

The Twins will need to bump someone off the 25 man roster to accommodate Berrios. It looks like it’ll be a starter who’ll be bumped. Ervin Santana and Tyler Duffey are dealing with injuries so perhaps one of the two will be placed on the disabled list.

There are also concerns about Kyle Gibson or perhaps the struggling Tommy Milone will be moved to the bullpen and reliever will be optioned. Those scenarios would both still leave the team with 6 starters.

In any case, there will be further moves made in the wake of this call up. We’ll stay on top of it as it develops.

It was a matter of when and not if Jose Berrios would be called up this season. His emergence will occur sooner than most imagined and that is partially due to the Twins’ desperation after a dreadful start and recent injuries to the rotation. The Twins will retain an additional year of control as they kept Berrios in the minors beyond April 14th.

Berrios had a 1.06 ERA over 17 innings with AAA Rochester this season. He’s struck out more than a batter an inning (20 in total) and has walked 8.

Time is running out on the Twins being able to salvage this season and Minnesota will be hoping Berrios is the miraculous elixir they dearly need.
