Where do the Twins stand among the AL roughly two months into the season?

Just over two months of the Major League Baseball season has been completed. Here’s where I think all the American League teams stand currently.

Where do the Twins stand among the AL roughly two months into the season?

American League power rankings

15. Chicago White Sox (19-43)

It’s been a rough year for the White Sox, just like everyone expected it to be. They have a team OPS of just .636. Luis Robert has been terrible at the plate; he’s hitting .183 with a .566 OPS. Their pitching actually hasn’t been that bad this year; they have a team ERA of 4.08, which ranks 17th in the majors. Shane Smith looks like an absolute steal out of the Rule 5 draft. He’s got a 2.68 ERA in 11 starts and has a real shot at AL Rookie of the Year.

14. Athletics (23-40)

The Athletics looked like they could be a surprise playoff contender after they started 22-20 after the first 42 games. They then went on to lose 11 straight and look about as bad as they were expected to be this year. They have the worst team ERA in the majors so far. On the offensive side, Jacob Wilson has been outstanding; he’s hitting .345 and is the current front-runner for Rookie of the Year in the AL.

13. Baltimore Orioles (24-36)

Definitely the most disappointing team so far this season. Baltimore was supposed to be a playoff contender but is already 16 games below the .500 mark. Pitching injuries have killed the Orioles so far. Tyler Wells, Grayson Rodriguez, and Kyle Brandish are all guys who have been reliable starters for them in the past, and none of the three have thrown a pitch yet so far this season. I do think they’ll play better as they get healthier, but it’s more than likely they’ve already dug themselves too deep of a hole. Shoutout to Ryan O’Hearn, though; he’s got a .962 OPS this year, and nobody is talking about it.

12. Los Angeles Angels (28-33)

The Angels have the same problem they always do this year, and that’s bad pitching. They’ve had the sixth-worst pitching staff in baseball up until this point. The lineup hasn’t been terrible; Logan O’Hoppe has 14 homers so far, and Zach Neto looks like one of the best young infielders in baseball. They also just got Mike Trout back.

11. Texas Rangers (29-33)

It’s all gone downhill since the Rangers won the World Series in 2023; they missed the playoffs last year and are off to an underwhelming start in 2025. The lineup has been quite disappointing; Adolis Garcia has just a .627 OPS, and Marcus Semien has a .535 OPS. On the pitching side, it is great to see DeGrom having a nice season; he’s been healthy and owns a 2.52 ERA.

10. Kansas City Royals (32-29)

It does seem a bit crazy to have a team that’s three games over .500 as the sixth-worst team in the AL, but I just can’t see how the Royals make the postseason when their offense is this bad. They have the fifth-worst team OPS in baseball; Bobby Witt and Maikel Garcia have been good, but other than that, the lineup is brutal. They have had an outstanding pitching staff led by Kris Bubic, who has a 1.45 ERA in 11 starts, but I highly doubt he’s able to sustain that over the entire season.

9. Toronto Blue Jays (32-29)

The Blue Jays lineup has had a lot of solid contributors so far this season. Vladdy Jr. has been good, Addison Barger has an .802 OPS, Bo Bichette and George Springer have bounced back this year, and Alejandro Kirk is hitting .296 after getting an extension during the offseason. Toronto doesn’t really have any great starters in their rotation, though they don’t have a single qualified starting pitcher with an ERA below 3.60 so far.

8. Boston Red Sox (30-34)

The overall record isn’t pretty, but I still like the Red Sox’s odds at playing in October this year. Their lineup has still been really impressive; they have the 8th-best team OPS in baseball. Rafael Devers has been one of the best hitters in the majors so far since becoming a full-time DH. Garrett Crochet looks like he could win the Cy Young; he’s got a 2.04 ERA in 12 starts. Boston is going to need some other guys to step up in their rotation, though.

7. Tampa Bay Rays (32-29)

One team that’s been playing some really good baseball lately is the Rays. They’ve quietly got the seventh-best pitching staff in the majors with a team ERA of 3.48. Drew Rasmussen has been phenomenal in 11 starts; he's got a 2.33 ERA with a 0.93 WHIP. Their lineup is decent; Junior Caminero is starting to get going; he’s already got 13 homers; Josh Lowe has been great; since coming back off the IL, he’s got a .937 OPS. Jonathan Aranda has hit well all season; he's currently got the 14th-best OPS in baseball at .914.

6. Cleveland Guardians (33-27)

Cleveland currently occupies the top wild card spot and is six games over .500. They also currently have a run differential of -13. They’ve still got a great bullpen centered around Clase, Smith, Gaddis, and Herrin. Their rotation hasn’t been as good as previous years, and the lineup hasn’t been great; they rank 22nd in the majors in team OPS. Jose Ramirez has been as good as ever. He's hitting .327 and has 11 home runs and 14 stolen bases.

5. Seattle Mariners (32-28)

The Mariners' lineup has made a significant improvement since last season, when they had one of the league's worst offenses. So far this year, they’re 12th in the majors in team OPS. Cal Raleigh is an MVP candidate; he leads the majors in home runs with 23 and has an OPS over 1.000. On the pitching side, their rotation has been decent; Castillo and Woo are having nice seasons. Their other three starters, Miller, Gilbert, and Kirby, have all missed some time due to injury.

4. Houston Astros (33-28)

Houston has put together a nice season so far, even after losing Bregman and Tucker. Isaac Paredes has been a great addition; he's got 11 homers and 1.7 bWAR up until this point. Their pitching staff ranks 11th in the majors with a team ERA of 3.66. Hunter Brown would be a Cy Young finalist if the season ended today. He's got a 1.83 ERA over 73.2 innings. Yordan Alvarez missed basically the entire month of May. He'll provide a huge boost to their lineup once he gets healthy.

3. Minnesota Twins (34-27)

The Twins had a really bad start to the season; through their first 33 games, they had a record of 13-20. Since then, their pitching staff has been the best in the majors, and they’ve improved to a 34-27 record, completely turning their season around. The Twins have had the best bullpen in the American League so far this year, and they’ve also got one of the league's best starting rotations. Their offense is also finally healthy; Buxton, Correa, Lewis, and Wallner are all active for the first time this season.

2. New York Yankees (37-23)

Last season's AL pennant winners are off to a great start in 2025. They’ve had the best offense in the AL, and it’s not even close. Their team OPS is currently .813. Aaron Judge has been by far the best player in baseball; he’s already got a 4.7 bWAR. Their starting rotation has also been pretty solid. Max Fried and Carlos Rodon both have sub-3.00 ERAs.

1. Detroit Tigers (41-22)

The Tigers are off to a ridiculous start; they’ve got the best record in the majors at 40-22. Their pitching staff has the fifth-best team ERA in the majors at 3.20. Tarik Skubal has been even better this season after winning the Cy Young last year. Detroit has also had a top-ten offense this season. They’ve got a team OPS of .733, which is the ninth-best in the majors.
