Bader going to the Phillies is the third significant trade the Twins have made lately. They traded Chris Paddack and Randy Dobnak to the Detroit Tigers, and dealt star closer Jhoan Duran to the Phillies in exchange for two top-100 prospects.
Bader, who is set to be a free agent this upcoming offseason, has arguably been having the best season of his career. While being worth 2.8 bWAR, Bader has slashed .258/.339/.439 with 12 homers, 13 doubles and 38 RBIs. He has provided the Twins with elite defense in left field and occasionally center to give Buxton rest. Bader ranks 12th in Major League Baseball in defensive runs saved with 13.
Who are Hendry Mendez and Geremy Villoria, whom the Twins acquired for Harrison Bader?
Mendez, 21, ranks as the Phillies' No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. In 297 at-bats with Double-A Reading this season, Mendez, a 6-foot-3 left-hander, has slashed .290/.374/.434 with eight homers, 13 doubles, three triples and 46 RBIs. In his minor league career, Mendez has a .747 OPS with 20 home runs and 175 RBIs in 1356 at-bats. Originally signed by the Brewers, Mendez was dealt to the Phillies in the 2023-24 offseason. According to scouting reports, Mendez is serviceable defensively as a corner outfielder and has average speed. He hits the ball on the ground frequently, but consistently hits balls hard.
Villoria, whom the Phillies signed out of Venezuela in January this year, is more of a lottery ticket than Mendez, as he is just 16 years old. He has made five starts in rookie ball this season, posting a 4.50 ERA with 19 strikeouts and four walks across 14 innings. Villoria, who is 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds, can throw a mid-90s fastball, a high-spin slider and a changeup.
Next, Willi Castro and Danny Coulombe are expected to be traded as well. Griffin Jax’s name has been at the center of trade rumors, too.
