Minnesota Twins to hire former Tigers coach Keith Beauregard as new hitting coach under Derek Shelton
The Minnesota Twins are hiring Keith Beauregard to replace Matt Borgschulte as the team's hitting coach, according to The Minnesota Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale. Additionally, Trevor Amicone and Rayden Sierra are returning as assistant hitting coaches, per Nightengale.
Beauregard, 42, spent the last three seasons as one of the Detroit Tigers' hitting coaches along with Michael Brdar before parting ways with the organization. Brdar will remain as Detroit's hitting coach next season.
Last season, the Tigers ranked in the middle third of Major League Baseball in batting average (.247), on-base percentage (.316) and slugging percentage (413). They ranked 11th in runs and 10th in home runs (198). Meanwhile, the Twins ranked 23rd in scoring. Hopefully, Beauregard can at least get the Twins' offense to where the Tigers' was last season.
Beauregard began his coaching career in 2011 as an assistant coach with the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks. He also served as a bench coach for the Pittsfield Colonials in the Can-Am Association during the summer of 2011.
In 2013, Beauregard became an assistant coach at Santa Clara University in California. He held the position through the 2017 season. After Santa Clara changed head coaches in 2018, the Los Angeles Dodgers hired Beauregard as a hitting coach for the AZL Dodgers Lasorda. Eventually, Beauregard earned the title of minor league assistant field coordinator with the Dodgers before being hired by the Tigers.
Beauregard joins LaTroy Hawkins and Grady Sizemore as new hires on the Twins' coaching staff. Hawkins will serve as the bullpen coach, while Sizemore will serve as the first base/outfield/baserunning coach. Additionally, pitching coach Pete Maki, assistant pitching coach Luis Ramirez and Ramon Borrego, who will move to third base coach, are staying on Minnesota's coaching staff.
The Twins still have to fill their remaining vacant coaching jobs. They need a bench coach to replace Jayce Tingler, who took a job as the San Francisco Giants' bench coach under new manager Tony Vitello. They also need to replace assistant bench coach Hank Conger and quality control coach Nate Dammann. Nightengale reported that the Twins are hoping to hire former hitting coach James Rowson to replace Tingler as bench coach.
