Twins set an embarrassing record on their way to a brand new low

There’s truly no bottom with this team.

It’s not hyperbolic to say that nobody wants to watch the Minnesota Twins, it’s a stone cold fact of life.

On Monday night the Twins lost their 12th game of the season and did it in front of a record-low crowd at Target Field. Not counting the COVID-restricted crowds during the 2020 season, Monday’s loss to the Mets saw the lowest attendance of since the team moved out of the Metrodome in 2009.

In total, only about 10,200 fans showed up and those brave souls were rewarded with another pathetic showing from one of the worst teams in baseball. Joe Ryan’s eight strikeout game was completely wasted by utter incompetence that saw two throwing errors result in 5-1 loss by the Twins.

Ryan’s performance, in a vaccum, was tremendous. He fanned eight batters and navigated out of a fifth inning jam that saw him give us all a jump scare when he appeared to suffer an injury after delivering a pitch.

Thankfully it ended up being nothing major, but what followed next is a prime example of why so few fans are willing to show up to the ballpark and watch the team limp to its demise.

Jorge Alcalá surrendered a home run to Juan Soto in the seventh inning to put the game away, but Minnesota’s fate was sealed well before that. New York scored two runs in the sixth inning off Justin Topa, one of which came thanks to a boneheaded throwing error that perfectly highlighted how undisciplined the team is right now.

On what should have been a rather routine inning-ending ground out to the pitcher, Topa airmailed his throw over Ty France’s head at first. It was an error that allowed Mark Veintos to score and make it a two-run lead for the Mets.

Soto’s homer was bad enough since it came off a struggling Alcalá, but the nail had already been hammered into the coffin at that point.

It’s no wonder only 10,000 fans showed up to the ballpark, and it’s going to be surprising if that number doesn’t continue to fall as the team continues to tumble. The Twins are a truly terrible team right now, owning the third-worst record in the entire league. Only the White Sox and Rockies have a worse record and there’s not a lot of distance in the race to the bottom.

This record-low turnout to Target Field also comes amid peak fan frustration with the Pohlads. Tensions between fans and ownership has been on the rise ever since the team decided to slash payroll and smother its own momentum after the 2023 season, and things only continue to get worse.

It’s unlikely the Pohlads will care about low attendance outside of their bottom line, but it’s yet another ugly mark on a season that is quickly spiraling out of control less than a month in.
