Would this be a smart move?

Sadly, Minnesota Twins first/second baseman Royce Lewis is a non-tender candidate. The Twins sent Lewis down to the minors in May after a rough start to the season. Unfortunately, the minor-league stint wasn't enough to unlock the 2023 version of Lewis, as the infielder finished the season with a poor 0.5 fWAR and an 85 wRC+ over 125 MLB games.

If this were Lewis' lone poor season, then sure, moving on would likely be a mistake. However, Lewis has failed to be productive since 2023, when he posted 2.3 fWAR and a 152 wRC+ with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in 58 games and hit four home runs in six postseason games.

Over the past three seasons, Lewis, 27, posted just 2.6 fWAR over 313 games. He had an 85 wRC+ in both 2025 and 2026.

Lewis is projected to make $5.1 million in arbitration next season, according to MLB Trade Rumors. He is under team control through the 2028 season.

Minnesota might also consider tendering Lewis a contract and then trading the 2017 first-overall pick.

If the Twins move on from Lewis, the club could consider signing long-time Philadelphia Phillies infielder Alec Bohm. MLB.com's Mark Feinsand linked Bohm to the Twins, Phillies, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.

Bohm, 30, will officially hit free agency after the World Series. He played seven years with the Phillies and is a former All-Star. The long-time Phillie can play first and third base.

This year, Bohm slashed a poor .249/.315/.383 with 15 home runs and 88 RBI over 155 games. He performed well during the Phillies' National League Wild Card Series loss to the Atlanta Braves, going 4-for-12 with a clutch home run, a walk and three RBI.

Twins shouldn't replace Royce Lewis with Alec Bohm

Honestly, it wouldn't make much sense for the Twins to move on from Lewis only to replace him with Bohm. In addition to his poor offensive numbers this year, Bohm recorded -11 Outs Above Average (-8 at third base, -3 at first base). Only Spencer Torkelson of the Detroit Tigers had a worse OAA (-12) among corner infielders. Additionally, Bohm's arm strength is in the bottom 20% of the league.

The Phillies selected Bohm with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Wichita State University. He made his MLB debut in 2020.

Throughout his seven years with the Phillies, Bohm hit .273/.325/.410 with 85 home runs and 483 RBI.
