The Minnesota Twins announced on Tuesday that they have recalled right-hander Jack Anderson from Triple-A St. Paul and optioned right-hander Woo-Suk Go to the Saints. Go had a rough outing in last night's ugly 13-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field, allowing three earned runs on four hits (one home run) and no walks with two strikeouts in an inning of work out of the bullpen.
Both Anderson and Go are recent acquisitions by Minnesota. The Twins claimed Anderson, 26, off waivers from the Boston Red Sox on July 11. He's thrown eight career big-league innings across three appearances (all this year) for the Red Sox, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
As for Go, the Twins acquired the right-hander from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash on July 5. Upon acquiring Go, the Twins had to immediately place him on their 26-man roster due to an assignment clause in his contract, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes. But since he has options, Minnesota is well within its rights to send Go back to Triple-A. In four innings across four appearances with Minnesota this season, Go has allowed four earned runs on eight hits (two home runs) and two walks with five strikeouts.
Anderson's pitch arsenal consists of a low-90s four-seamer, a low-80s split-finger, a low-80s slider, a high-70s sweeper and a high-70s curveball.
Anderson made just one appearance with Triple-A St. Paul. He made the start for the club on Friday and threw three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and no walks with one strikeout. In 17 appearances (12 starts) at the Triple-A level this season, Anderson has recorded a 4.57 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 52 strikeouts across 61 innings.
Twins going with bullpen game in must-win matchup vs. Guardians
Since Anderson has mainly been a starter this year, he can throw multiple innings out of the bullpen for Minnesota. Left-hander Kendry Rojas is slated to start for Minnesota on Tuesday in what appears to be a bullpen game, so the Twins are likely planning to deploy Anderson for multiple innings tonight.
After dropping the final two games of last weekend's three-game set against the Chicago Cubs and the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians on Monday, the Twins desperately need to get back into the win column tonight. With the Aug. 3 trade deadline near and Minnesota three games out of a playoff spot, the team is currently in its most crucial stretch of the season. It won't be an easy task to win tonight, as Minnesota is going with a bullpen game while All-Star left-hander Parker Messick is starting for Cleveland. The game is slated to begin at 5:40 p.m. CDT.
