Minnesota Twins legend Kirby Puckett had one of the best performances in baseball history against the Milwaukee Brewers at County Stadium in Milwaukee on Aug. 30, 1987. The Hall of Fame center fielder went 6-for-6 with two home runs, two doubles and four RBI. Only nine players in MLB history have hit two homers in a six-hit game. Puckett is also the only player ever to hit two homers and two doubles in a six-hit game.
Based on what he did with the bat that game, Puckett had one of the best performances in baseball history. But he didn't just shine at the plate; Puckett robbed Hall of Famer Robin Yount of a grand slam, which ended up being crucial as the Twins won 10-6.
"It's a day I'll never forget. Everything I hit just seemed to fall in. It didn't matter where I hit it. It just seemed to fall in," Puckett said. "And we won, so that was important too. That was the most important thing."

Twins legend Kirby Puckett arguably had best performance in baseball history vs. Brewers in 1987
Most remember Puckett for his performance in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series, where he robbed a home run and hit a walk-off home run to force a Game 7 against the Atlanta Braves. However, his 6-for-6 showing in late Aug. 1987 was arguably even more impressive. Obviously, the stakes were much higher in the 1991 World Series, but if we're strictly talking about best performances in MLB history, Puckett arguably had the best one against the Brewers in 1987.
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani may be the only player who had a better game than Puckett did on Aug. 30, 1987. In Game 4 of the 2025 National League Championship Series against the Brewers, Ohtani hit three home runs and struck out 10 batters over six scoreless innings to complete the 4-0 sweep over the Brewers, sending the Dodgers to the World Series.
The Twins improved to 69-63 after Puckett's performance. We all know how the 1987 season ended. Minnesota finished the regular season atop the American League West with an 85-77 record before defeating the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS and the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series.
In 1987, Puckett won a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove award and finished third in American League MVP voting. He posted 4.2 bWAR and a .332/.367/.534 slash line with 28 home runs, 32 doubles, five triples and 99 RBI.
