The Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that they hired Brian Reith as their new pitching coach. Minnesota fired its previous pitching coach, Pete Maki, shortly after the regular season.
Reith comes from the Tampa Bay Rays, an organization known for its strong ability to develop pitchers. Reith served as pitching coach for the Rays' Triple-A affiliate, the Durham Bulls, for the past five seasons. He pitched in parts of three MLB seasons with the Cincinnati Reds from 2001-04.
Additionally, the Twins announced they promoted Ben Myers to assistant athletic trainer. Myers has been on the training staff for the Triple-A St. Paul Saints.

Reith is definitely an interesting hire. The fact that he has aided in the development of many of the Rays' pitchers is a reason for fans to be excited about him joining Minnesota's staff. The Rays, currently in the ALCS, ranked seventh in ERA (3.70) and first in WHIP (1.14) during the regular season.
More about new Twins pitching coach Brian Reith
Reith, 48, posted a 5.92 ERA over 127 2/3 innings during his three seasons in the big leagues. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in 1996 and played in the organization until being traded to the Reds in 2000. He joined the Pittsburgh Pirates system in 2005 and threw for their Triple-A affiliate. Reith played independent ball from 2007-09.
The Rays hired Reith in 2015. From 2015-17, he served as pitching coach for the Single-A Valley Renegades. He had the same role with the High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods from 2018-19. The Rays promoted him to pitching coach for the Double-A Montgomery Biscuits ahead of the 2020 season, but COVID-19 canceled the season.
Reith held the title of Major League fellow, pitching development with the Rays in 2021 before being named the Bulls' pitching coach ahead of the 2022 season.
Under Reith's leadership, the Bulls' pitching staff ranked 7th in ERA in 2022, 2nd in 2023, 8th in 2024, 2nd in 2025 and 13th in 2026.
It'll be interesting to see what type of philosophy Reith brings to the Twins organization. The Twins' pitching staff ranked 25th in ERA this year and 24th last year. It wasn't all Maki's fault, as multiple injuries and the trade deadline fire sale left the Twins with a weakened pitching staff. However, it was likely time to move on from Maki, especially since the Twins hired him under completely different leadership.
