Twins fans should be happy with AL Central rival Guardians' out-of-nowhere trade

Cleveland got a strong defensive catcher. However, he's one of the worst hitters in the league, and he wasn't cheap for the Guardians to acquire.

The Cleveland Guardians, who defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-4 last night at Progressive Field, are acquiring catcher Patrick Bailey from the San Francisco Giants, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The Giants will receive left-handed pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson and the 29th overall pick of the 2026 MLB Draft (the first selection of Competitive Balance Round A). Per the Athletic's Zack Meisel, the Guardians will option catcher Bo Naylor to Triple-A to make room for Bailey on their 26-man roster.

It's an interesting trade to say the least. Bailey is arguably the best defensive catcher in baseball, having won the last two Gold Glove Awards and Fielding Bible Awards. This season, he's posted 2 Caught Stealing Above Average (95th percentile) and 5 Catcher Framing Runs (100th percentile) with a 1.86 second average pop time (100th percentile). However, he's been a below-average hitter since making his MLB debut in 2023, posting a 72 wRC+. In 89 plate appearances this season, he's slashing .146/.213/.183 with the second-worst wRC+ (16) among hitters with at least 80 plate appearances.

While the Guardians' defense will certainly improve with Bailey behind the plate, Twins fans should still be happy Cleveland made the trade. The Guardians already have a strong defensive catcher in Austin Hedges, who is a poor hitter like Bailey. Cleveland also has an intriguing catching prospect in Cooper Ingle, who has posted an outstanding .408/.597/.755 slash line with five homers and 19 RBI over 72 plate appearances for Triple-A Columbus this season. Granted, Ingle was on the IL from April 24-May 3, but he still appears ready to make the jump to the big leagues. Now, he'll likely have to wait longer than previously expected to make his MLB debut, which should be good news for Twins fans.

Bailey trade may hurt Guardians more than it will help them

The Guardians lead the AL Central with a 21-19 record, while the Twins are in last place with a 16-23 record. While it's unlikely that Minnesota will catch up to Cleveland in the standings, it's still possible. Since Bailey is an extremely poor hitter and is now blocking Ingle, Minnesota appears to be in a better position to catch Cleveland. Still, Twins fans should keep their expectations in check. But even for those Twins fans who lack optimism regarding their favorite team these days, many of them would be happy to see the Guardians fail.

Long-term, the Bailey trade appears to be a solid deal for the Giants. Wilkinson is an intriguing pitching prospect who boasts a career 2.82 ERA with 330 strikeouts over 252 minor league innings. San Francisco's new draft pick could also very easily turn into a top prospect. There's a good chance that the Guardians will eventually regret acquiring Bailey.
