Twins could've had Yankees' former No. 1 prospect Jasson Domínguez for Jhoan Durán at trade deadline

All things considered, the Twins got a solid return from the Philadelphia Phillies in the blockbuster Jhoan Durán trade from this past summer. Eduardo Tait is a highly regarded prospect at a premier position, ranking No. 57 among the league's best prospects per MLB Pipeline, and Mick Abel has the potential to be a solid mid-rotation arm.

There is an alternative reality where the Twins don't trade Durán to the Phillies, instead moving him to the New York Yankees in exchange for New York's former No. 1 prospect, Jasson Domínguez. The Twins could have made that happen if they wanted, as Empire Sports Media's Ryan Garcia reported that the Yankees offered Domínguez, 22, in a package for Durán. Randy Wilkins, director of ESPN's The Captain, added that New York was also seeking additional players from the Twins in the proposed trade.

The fact that the Twins ended up trading Durán to the Phillies instead of the Yankees proves that the Twins expect Tait and Abel to be significant contributors in the future. Tait plays a position that lacks young talent, and Abel possesses a pitch mix that could lead to him becoming an excellent MLB pitcher. Sure, the Twins probably were interested in trading Durán for Domínguez, but since the Yankees wanted more pieces in return, the Phillies deal was more worth it for the Twins. Instead of giving up someone else in addition to Durán for just one young player, the Twins got one MLB-ready starting pitcher and one of the highest-ranked catching prospects for just Durán.

The Twins' outfield is pretty crowded at this point as well, with Byron Buxton, Matt Wallner, Trevor Larnach, Alan Roden, Austin Martin and James Outman currently part of the organization. Domínguez would be nice to have, as he has the potential to be an All-Star outfielder. However, it seems the team made the right decision in passing on the Yankees' offer for Durán to add an important rotation arm and a catcher for the future.
