It's no secret that the Minnesota Twins desperately need more relievers after trading righties Jhoan Durán, Griffin Jax, Louis Varland and Brock Stewart and current free agent lefty Danny Coulombe at last year's trade deadline. As of now, the only relievers who are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the Twins' bullpen next season are righties Justin Topa, Cole Sands and Eric Orze and lefty Kody Funderburk.
If the Twins want to be competitive at all in 2026, adding more relievers is necessary. One righty they should consider signing is Seranthony Domínguez, whom the Twins "briefly inquired about" last month, according to KSTP's Darren Wolfson.
Wolfson made it clear the Twins were interested in Domínguez last month. The righty is still a free agent, so Minnesota could still sign him.
If the Twins were to add Domínguez, he'd significantly improve their bullpen. He began the 2025 campaign with the Baltimore Orioles, posting a 3.24 ERA with 54 strikeouts and 24 walks across 41 1/3 innings before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays on July 29 for righty pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown. He had a 3.00 ERA with 25 strikeouts and 12 walks in 21 innings with Toronto to finish the regular season. He played a vital role in helping the Blue Jays reach World Series Game 7, managing a 3.18 ERA with 10 strikeouts and 11 walks in 11 1/3 innings across 12 postseason outings in 2025.
Domínguez, 31, relies on five pitches. Last season, he threw his high-90s four-seamer 43.2% of the time, while mixing in a high-80s sweeper (21.8%) and split finger (16.6%), high-90s sinker (13.4%) and low-80s curveball (4.9%).
Twins clearly planning for 2026 trade deadline with latest rumored target, former Blue Jays righty Seranthony Domínguez
While president Derek Falvey has said he plans to build around Minnesota's stars for 2026, and backed up his statement by acquiring Orze and first basemen Josh Bell and Eric Wagaman, a 2026 postseason berth is still unlikely for the Twins. It's possible, as they have plenty of talent, but it's still unlikely.
Let's say the Twins sign Domínguez, and are surprisingly competing for a postseason spot when the trade deadline nears. Then they'll keep him, and he likely will be one of the team's top relievers. But if the Twins sign Domínguez and are not competing for a playoff spot come late July, then they can trade the righty for prospects, which would bolster an already-strong farm system.
