The Minnesota Twins have already made two trades to bolster their roster in the past few days. On Thursday, Minnesota acquired left-handed reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets for infield prospects Billy Amick and Bruin Agbayani. The next day, the Twins acquired right-handed starting pitcher Dean Kremer from the Baltimore Orioles for outfield prospect Jhomnardo Reyes.
According to The Athletic's Dan Hayes and Ken Rosenthal, the Twins are still looking to "bolster their roster further." Minnesota didn't have to give up much to acquire Minter and Kremer, as all three players whom the club surrendered in the deals ranked outside the organization's top 20 prospects, per MLB Pipeline. But if the Twins want to make a big splash and acquire an All-Star for their next move, they will have to give up a higher-ranked prospect.
One player the Twins could consider trading is 19-year-old catching prospect Eduardo Tait. Minnesota acquired Tait and right-hander Mick Abel from the Philadelphia Phillies for star closer Jhoan Duran last summer. Before this year's draft, there's almost no chance the Twins would even consider moving Tait. But after the club selected catcher Vahn Lackey with the third overall pick and catcher Carson Tinney in the second round, Minnesota could afford to trade Tait for the right price.
Obviously, Tait is still a highly regarded prospect whom Minnesota shouldn't just trade just to trade, but if he can fetch you a top controllable starter or a lockdown closer, the team could use him as part of a package to make a deal happen. MLB Pipeline has yet to update its prospect rankings after the draft, but FanGraphs already has Lackey as the Twins' No. 2 overall prospect and MLB's No. 14.
Eduardo Tait could be a major trade chip for Twins
Lackey, who is two years older than Tait, appears to be the Twins' catcher of the future. The Twins also have two other solid catching prospects: Khadim Diaw (No. 10) and Enrique Jimenez (No. 24).
Some question whether Tait could be a big-league catcher. He hasn't had a great offensive season, hitting .228/.290/.441 in 89 games with High-A Cedar Rapids. And since he's still a teenager, it's difficult to project how he will pan out as a big leaguer.
Regardless, Tait is still viewed as a top-100 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The Twins should only move him for the right return. The catcher headlined a deal for Duran, so Minnesota would need a player of that caliber to part ways with him.
