Media outlets have been frequently mentioning Byron Buxton as a trade candidate ever since last summer. However, with a full no-trade clause, Buxton has made it crystal clear he has no intention of going anywhere. The star center fielder declared he was a "Twin for life" during last year's All-Star break and expressed frustration with the Twins' brass for not shutting down trade rumors last February. On Thursday, Buxton made it clear once again he has no intention of leaving the Twins.
Byron Buxton loves the #MNTwins clubhouse vibes. The trade talk? "I don't give a f***. ... I ain't said nothing about leaving. Nor will I. I'm a Twin.” Story is open for all to read. Check it out in @TheAthletic only.https://t.co/Y6wokw5A81

Buxton, who is slashing .270/.330/.589 (149 wRC+) with 23 home runs and seven stolen bases in 64 games this season, has been with the Twins organization since being selected second overall in the 2012 MLB Draft out of Appling County High School in Baxley, Georgia. Since Buxton is from Georgia, and the Atlanta Braves hold the second-best record (46-27) in MLB, many speculated Buxton would be willing to waive his no-trade clause to play for his hometown team. However, that's clearly not the case.
Obviously, it's not out of the realm of possibility for Buxton to change his mind about waiving his no-trade clause if the Twins tear things down ahead of the deadline again. But since Buxton didn't want to be traded last summer or offseason, and he has said he doesn't want to leave, the likelihood of the star center fielder donning a different uniform this season is extremely low.
Twins' Byron Buxton is not going anywhere
Also, not to get too optimistic about a team with a 36-40 record and -24 run differential, but the Twins are just 1 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays and Athletics for the third and final American League Wild Card spot. The AL is shockingly weak this year, and Buxton wants to win with the team he has been with for over a decade.
Buxton is under team control through the 2028 season at a little over $15 million per season. It's an extremely team-friendly contract for one of the best center fielders in the game. He would easily be the most attractive player on the trade market if he were willing to waive his no-trade clause and would get the Twins an absolute haul.
However, an already disgruntled fanbase would NOT be happy if the team traded Buxton. If the Twins are where they are expected to be when the deadline approaches, not near a playoff spot, there's a good chance the team will deal Ryan Jeffers, Joe Ryan and others. Fans wouldn't be happy about that, but trading Buxton would anger fans on a completely different level.
