Another top prospect is getting a major promotion from the Twins
It's another sign of how bright the future is in Minnesota.
Despite all of the frustration Minnesota Twins fans have felt this season, it remains undeniable that the future is very bright.
That doesn't do much to help the team now, when they need it most, nor does it calm fears that the team will once again reduce spending in the offseason. Twins fans have been stuck for years in limbo between being excited about top prospects getting hyped up as internal solutions to roster problems and not actually seeing any results.
Minnesota experienced a youth movement last year that has started to change that a bit, and the waves keep rolling over new young talent to the MLB roster. Royce Lewis, Brooks Lee, and Matt Wallner headline a group of young players who have been called up over the last year and the line isn't getting any shorter.
Twins promote two more top pitching prospects to Triple-A
On Monday the Twins announced that Marco Raya is being promoted from Double-A Wichita to Triple-A St. Paul. He's the top pitching prospect in the farm system to have not yet made his debut, and is No. 2 on MLB Pipeline's rankings behind Zebby Matthews.
Raya will be joined by Cory Lewis, the Twins' No 14 overall prospect, as both will join the Saints for the final games of the Triple-A season.
It's a huge promotion for Raya, who didn't have the ascension that Matthews or David Festa had but is right there alongside them as important pieces of the future. He was considered a 1B option to Festa back in Spring Training but was passed up by Matthews after the insane season he put together in the minors.
The fact that he was passed over by Matthews shouldn't be seen as a bad thing, rather yet another positive sign of how brigh the future is in Minnesota. He's been nothing but electric for the Wind Surge, with his last outing being the perfect way for him to end his season.
Well, that's not technically the end of his season. The Saints still have six games left, all of which will be at CHS Field and will be against Indianapolis. Raya is going to see action in at least one of those games, and it's going to be a great glimpse into what he has and could help set the foundation for an MLB arrival next year.
There's still work that needs to be done, but he posted a 2.09 ERA over his last eight starts and finished his season just shy of 100 strikeouts in 99 innings of work. MLB Pipeline compared him to Walker Buehler which is asking a lot but is also telling of his potential.
Raya will have a chance to show off and earn an invite to Spring Training next year with a shot to earn a roster spot, which at the very least gives Twins fans something to look forward to.
