We're just weeks away from the MLB Trade Deadline, but the Minnesota Twins have already been active in bringing players in.

Everyone looks forward to the deadline for the splashy deals that usually happen, but the Twins quietly made a trade back in April that is just now paying off. The reason is rather unfortunate, as Jose Miranda is hitting the IL after missing the last few games while dealing with back tightness.

Miranda was on a historic run prior to getting injured. He set a new franchise record after reaching base in 12 consecutive at-bats, something that put him on the national stage an in the Hall of Fame. MLB revealed that the bat Miranda used during his streak was going to be enshrined in Cooperstown, which is timely thanks to Joe Mauer's induction taking place there in a week.

That bat was a massive part of sparking the Twins offense over the last month, but Miranda is going to be out of the picture as the team heads into the All-Star Break.

Twins place Jose Miranda on 10-day IL, but he's expected back sooner than that

As a corresponding move to placing Miranda on the IL, Minnesota is calling up Diego A. Castillo who was acquired from the Orioles back in April. The good news is that Miranda's trip to the IL is retroactive, and he's not expected to miss much time at all.

With the All-Star Break looming, now is the perfect time to rest him.

It's impossible to overstate just how incredible Miranda's star turn has been this season. He burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2022 but fell off a cliff last season to the point where his future with the team was called into question.

Miranda has answered that by hitting .325/.366/.522 with a .888 OPS so far this season. His historic heater was a snapshot of his potential and watching him turn into one of the hottest hitters in baseball was deeply satisfying to Twins fans on just about every level imaginable.

He's down, but not out and the timing works out perfectly. Not only is his stint on the IL retroactive, but he'll have the All-Star Break to get some extra rest before returning. As for Castillo, he was a quiet acquisition earlier this year but the Twins have shown a knack for hitting home runs with lower key guys on the roster.

Willi Castro is a pefect example of that, as he signed as a minor leaguer last year and is now representing the Twins at the All-Star Game this week. That's not the expectation for Castillo, but it's at least a reminder that Minnesota's front office knows what it's doing and there's a chance another small move pays off big.
