After winning a season series over the Yankees for the first time in over two decades, the Minnesota Twins have once again reverted back to old ways.

The Twins are playing a series finale in the Bronx on Thursday, a game that will be the final matchup against New York this season and risks becoming an eighth straight loss. Minnesota has been dragged behind the woodshed by the Yankees, getting pounded for over 30 runs allowed and finding absolutely no answer offensively.

It's been embarassing to watch, and a painful reminder of how much further the team needs to go before it's a legitmate contender. A bad season series against the Yankees isn't fatal in the long run, but it doesn't exactly set the right tone if these two teams were to meet up again in October.

Thursday could be a chance for the Twins to escape with at least some diginity rather than folding and getting swept -- again.

Twins vs. Yankees starting pitchers, June 6th

If there's a Twins started badly in need of a good start, it's Pablo Lopez (5-5, 4.84 ERA) who hasn't looked like himself lately. We all know what Lopez is capable of, which is a lot better than the slump he fell into during May.

Lopez allowed 16 runs over three starts, including a game against the Rangers in which he only lasted 4.2 innings. That's uncharateristically bad, and a bounce back against the Yankees would be the exact confidence booster he needs.

His turnaround might have already started. Lopez looked like his vintage self against the Houston Astros in his last start, going seven innings while allowing just a single run. He's going to need more of that against the Yankees, but there are already signs that he might be about to recapture his old magic just in time for summer.

Pablo Lopez vs. Yankees hasn't been a fun matchup

This will be just the fourth time in his career that Lopez is facing the Yankees, and he had yet to log a win against them. He's 0-2 with a 2.95 ERA in those three starts, which at least proves that hasn't been rocked by New York so much as he's been on the wrong side of some tough games.

Meanwhile, the Yankees will be sending out Marcus Stroman (5-2, 2.73 ERA) to try and polish off the season sweep of Minnesota. He's already faced the Twins once, dominating them for six innings while allowing zero runs and just a pair of hits. He's riding a wave of near-perfection from Yankees starters this series, and Minnesota has its work cut out if it wants to avoid another crushing loss.
