When do the Twins play next? Upcoming schedule and probable pitchers for next 7 days
Here's a look at the upcoming schedule for the Minnesota Twins, and who will be on the mound.
April hasn't really been a great month for Twins baseball, which seems like an incredible understatement given what fans have been subjected to.
Minnesota is off to a 6-11 start, which is made even worse knowing that offensively the team is hitting a collective .185 and rank 26th in balls hit over 95 mph, while also ranking nearly dead last in hitting balls off the middle of the plate.
That's not good. Like, at all.
It doesn't take a baseball savant to figure that out, though, and the obviousness of how bad the Twins are is one of the reasons they're so hard to watch right now. Compounding that frustration is knowing they should be better, since we've seen life out of the lineup recently.
Last Saturday the Twins swept a doubleheader against Detroit by putting up a total of 15 runs over two games. Since then they've lost four straight and have failed so badly at the plate that Rocco Baldelli seems to be at a loss for how to fix things.
Injuries have played a role, but that's a crutch. Losing Royce Lewis, Carlos Correa, and Max Kepler hasn't helped but the lineup is larger than those three guys and the scattered production is starting to add up. Austin Martin and Jose Miranda got the assignment but no one else seemingly has. The next seven days are going to be critical for Minnesota as they have a chance to avoid disaster and beat up on some teams they easily should be able to.
Minnesota Twins schedule 2024: Upcoming matchups and probable pitchers
The Twins are off on Thursday -- although it could be argued they've been off since last Saturday. Four straight losses sunk Minnesota to 2-5 on this most recent road trip but they return to Target Field to hopefully get things back on track.
Action gets back underway on Friday with another series against the Tigers before Minnesota welcomes in the lowly Chicago White Sox to town.
Minnesota Twins Probable Pitchers for April 18-24
Date | Matchup | Probable Pitchers |
---|---|---|
Thursday, April 18th | OFF DAY | |
Friday, April 19th | vs. Tigers | Joe Ryan vs. Jack Flaherty |
Saturday, April 20th | vs. Tigers | Bailey Ober vs. Reese Olson |
Sunday, April 21st | vs. Tigers | Louie Varland vs. Casey Mize |
Monday, April 22nd | vs. White Sox | Chris Paddack vs. Nick Nastrini |
Tuesday, April 23rd | vs. White Sox | Pablo Lopez vs. Erick Fedde |
Wednesday, April 24th | vs. White Sox | Joe Ryan vs. Garrett Crochet |
The Twins have already split with the Tigers, which feels about right given the shape those two teams are in. Detroit is starting to slump offensively, which should be good news for Joe Ryan on Friday and potentially sets up Bailey Ober and Louie Varland for bounce back performances.
Ober got beat up by in his first start against the Royals but smoothed out over his next to games. He one run and struck out seven against the Dodgers and followed that up by pitching six scoreless innings on Sunday against Detroit. It was the bullpen that came apart late and spoiled a great start by Ober, and he'll be looking to double up owning the Tigers on Saturday.
Things have been a little harder for Varland, who has gotten cooked in all three starts he's made. He seems really close to figuring things out, but on paper he's been a total disaster allowing 10 runs and four homers over his last two starts. It might be getting to the point where Minnesota starts looking for a replacement, but there's a lack of bodies behind Varland that might buy him some time to figure things out.
As dire as things seem now, we'll learn a lot about who this Twins team is against the White Sox. Chicago is truly awful, and if Minnesota looks bad against them it'll be a telltale sign that things are broken beyond repair.
We're less than 20 games into the season and that's where the panic level is, which is hardly what anyone was expecting coming off how things went last season.
