Minnesota Twins probable pitchers & starting lineups vs. Baltimore Orioles, April 16
Can the Twins bounce back from a brutal loss on Monday night?
Coming off a split with the Detroit Tigers, things went backward on the Minnesota Twins in their first game out in Baltimore.
Both Ryan Jeffers and Jose Miranda came to life at the plate but as has been the case so far this year, no one else did. There were some bright spots like Edouard Julien continuing to hammer left-handed pitching, but none of it was enough to help the Twins overcome a 7-4 loss to the Orioles.
Making matters worse was Louie Varland getting lit up for four runs in five innings and allowing 11 hits. He struck out six batters and was throwing 98 mph pitches in the fourth inning, which seems to suggest he's just a few tweaks away from getting right, but Monday night was not it.
Now the Twins will try to get back on track, but will be going up against a tough pitcher in addition to a high-powered lineup in Baltimore.
Twins vs. Orioles probable starting pitchers
- Chris Paddack will be making his third start of the season and will be aiming for a decision this time around. He pitched well in his first two outings, specifically finding the gear Minnesota was hoping he would in his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hasn't made it out of the fifth inning yet this season, but he logged five strikeouts in 4.2 IP last time out and that was against one of the best lineups in baseball. He'll face another tough test on Tuesday, and another solid start could go a long way in securing his place as a valuable piece of Minnesota's rotation moving forward.
- As if Monday wasn't tough enough for the Twins, Tuesday won't get much easier. Minnesota is facing one of Baltimore's best pitchers in Grayson Rodriguez, who will be on the mound tonight looking to sharpen his 2.50 ERA and 2-0 record even more than he already has. Rodriguez has yet to falter out of the gate, allowing just five runs in almost 20 innings of work so far this season. He's averaging seven strikeouts per game and will be facing a Twins lineup that largely struggled in the first game -- outside of Ryan Jeffers and Jose Miranda. The good news for Minnesota is that this won't be a complete look at how Rodriguez would do against a healthy lineup, but it's not going to make bouncing back from Monday's loss very easy.
