Minnesota Twins probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Seattle Mariners, May 8
After a brutal meltdown last night, the Minnesota Twins look to get things right on Wednesday.
A late implosion spoiled what might have been the start of another winning streak for the Minnesota Twins. Instead, they'll have to pick up the pieces and try again on Wednesday, although washing the taste of what happened on Tuesday out of their mouths seems more important.
Minnesota tied the game 6-6 in the eighth inning only to allow four runs in the top of the ninth to put the game well out of reach. Seattle scored eight runs in the last three innings of the game, which is something Rocco Baldelli called out as the reason things went sideways.
It seems obvious to point out, but the Twins were uncharacteristically bad. One of the benefits of the 12-game winning streak the team just went on was how it corrected a lot of the mistakes Minnesota was making early in the season.
All of that came roaring back on Tuesday night, but it's not the end of the road. The Twins have two more games in this series against the Mariners, and things can get back on track Wednesday.
Twins vs. Mariners probable starting pitchers, May 8
We've got another potentially fantastic pitching matchup on our hands Wednesday night. Chris Paddack (3-1, 4.78 ERA) is starting for Minnesota and The Sheriff is hoping to keep settling in as a key piece of the rotation.
Paddack is a more advanced version of Simeon Woods Richardson, and there's a chance he has a similar performance tonight. On Monday Woods Richardson set a new career-high for strikeouts in a game, and Paddack is on a similar track. He struck out six against the Red Sox in his last start and finished with 10 strikeouts against the White Sox.
His problem has been consistency, as Paddack threw four strikeouts combined in the two games between those other starts. If the trend continues, that would mean a down game for him against Seattle, but that also offers even more incentive or Paddack to show out and break free.
For Seattle, George Kirby (3-2, 3.76 ERA) will be on the mound, which is trouble for Twins hitters. Kirby has been tremendous this year, allowing just one run over his last three starts while posting 22 strikeouts.
Minnesota's offense has remained alive despite the winning streak ending. Even though the team lost on Tuesday, it scored six runs which is hopefully a sign that things won't regress. Hoping for that kind of performance against Kirby is a tough ask, though.
