There might not be a better time for the Minnesota Twins to be playing the New York Yankees than this week.

Let year Minnesota finally got over the hump, beating the Yankees in a season series for the first time since 2001. It helped set the tone for a season of bucking trends, as the year ended with the Twins winning their first playoff game since 2004 and their first playoff series in 21 years.

Beating the Yankees in the regular season isn’t nearly as satisfying as throwing them off their back in October, but that bridge has yet to be crossed.

For now, the Twins will face New York with a chance to validate its winning ways. A 12-game winning streak that helped turn the season around was written off as a stroke scheduling luck, while the recent streak against teams like the Red Sox, Mariners, and Blue Jays have been called into question as well.

There will be question about the Twins if they can have similar success against the Yankees.

Minnesota will be sending out Chris Paddack (4-1, 4.34 ERA) to try and get things off to a hot start against the Yankees. Not only will the Twins have a chance to make a statement on Tuesday, but The Sheriff has the chance to truly turn some heads with another great performance.

So far this year, Paddack has settled into exactly the type of pitcher Minnesota needs him to be. He was hailed as someone who could help replace lost innings from Sonny Gray and he’s lived up to the hype. It hasn’t been perfect, but Paddack has a 1.69 ERA over the last seven days and is coming off a start where he fanned 10 Mariners batters.

That’s not an anomaly, as Paddack struck out 10 batters against the White Sox earlier in the year and has 28 strikeouts over his last four starts.

For New York it will be Carlos Rodon (3-2, 3.56 ERA) on the mound looking to spoil Minnesota’s fun. He was one of the Yankees’ free agent signings a year ago who is still settling in and coming off injury, not unlike Paddack, and has strung together a decent season so far. His record might not blow anyone away but his stuff certainly has.

Rodon has 43 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched, and the Twins offense won’t have it easy on Tuesday night.
