Minnesota Twins probable pitchers & starting lineup vs. Kansas City Royals, May 27
The Twins will kick off a huge series against the Royals on Memorial Day.
We’re nearly two full months into the season and the Minnesota Twins already have a pretty big hole to climb out of. A 7-13 start set things back rather significantly and bookending a 12-game winning streak by losing five or more consecutive games didn’t help get things on track.
Minnesota is close to getting things right, but it seems the team can’t get out of its own way long enough to make meaningful progress. That could all change this week, as the Twins welcome the Kansas City Royals to town in what is one of the biggest series of the season so far.
That seems like an oxymoron, as the Royals are typically never much more than a minor annoyance in the AL Central race. Like a fly buzzing around your head, the Royals are typically an obstacle to navigate around more than anything else, but this season things are different.
Kansas City put together the offseason most experts thought the Twins would and added meaningful pieces to the roster. The result has been a total turnaround from a 106-loss season which is made even more frustrating by the struggles Minnesota has experienced.
Rather than cower in the face of what happened with Diamond Sports Group, the Royals decided they’d rather win and it’s worked so far this season. Minnesota is now in a position where it’s more than five games back of Kansas City in the AL Central and needs to put together a strong series this week to avoid losing valuable ground.
Twins vs. Royals probable starting pitchers, May 27
Joe Ryan (3-3, 3.15 ERA) will be on the mound for the Twins in the first game of the series on Monday afternoon. He’s already pitched against the Royals this year, and is looking to continue what has been a career of dominance over Kansas City.
In seven starts against the Royals, Ryan is 5-0 with a 1.52 ERA and 46 strikeouts. That’s exactly the type of performance the Twins will need out of him to not only punch back at Kansas City but bounce back from a gnarly loss to the Rangers on Sunday.
Meanwhile the Royals will be sending out Alec Marsh (4-1, 2.72 ERA) to try and shut down the Twins. Kansas City dropped two of its first three games against Minnesota this year, which came right at the beginning of the season and wasn’t really an indicator of where either team would be. Minnesota has been sort of a fire hose while the Royals have remained consistent, and pitching from guys like Marsh is a big reason why.
