Carlos Correa sent exactly the right message after Twins lack of trade deadline moves
This is why Carlos Correa is worth every penny of his $200 million contract.
There was plenty of chatter about the Minnesota Twins in the aftermath of yet another uninspired pursuit to improve the roster. Fans who had to live through a quiet winter where the biggest move was slashing the payroll, watched as those vibes were run back a few months later at the trade deadline.
Minnesota made just a single trade, acquiring reliever Trevor Richards from the Blue Jays in about as low wattage a deal as it gets. It’s not Richards’ fault that the deal doesn’t move the needle, and he may very well end up being a decent addition. The general feeling around Twins Territory, though, is that the team was in a position to make meaningful moves and opted for a familiarly frugal route instead.
Not everyone is letting that bring them down, though.
Carlos Correa is working his way back to the lineup and took some time to talk Twins fans down and remind them that this team is still really good.
Carlos Correa had the perfect reaction to Twins lack of trade deadline moves
The quote in blinking flashing lights that is making the rounds is without a doubt bold, but it’s the rest of what Correa said that should ring true with Twins fans.
Correa’s message was a little deeper than just that quote — which is magnificent, by the way. What he was getting at was less about making a statement for all
"We’ve got to stop focusing on what the outside help might have looked like and just focus on what we have in-house,” Correa said, via Aaron Gleeman. “You know, like I tell the players, there’s no better trade deadline addition than taking our game to a different level. There’s so much potential on this team, and I don’t think we’ve fully reached it yet."
That’s the exact right kind of message to send after what happened — and didn’t happen — at the trade deadline, and why Correa continues to be worth every penny of his contract. His play on the field speaks for itself, but we’re constantly reminded of just how valuable his leadership is in the clubhouse even if it’s not as easily quantified like his batting stats or defensive rating.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard someone inside of the clubhouse stick up for the guys who are already there, either. After the Twins failed to make a meaingfully move over the winter, Rocco Baldelli pushed back on the idea that the team needed to make a trade or signing in order to be competitive.
He was right, and so is Correa.
It’s so easy to get stuck in the echo chamber of rage that Twins fans have been forced into, but a lot of it is just noise. Minnesota is one of the best teams in the American League and well within striking distance of winning a division title.
Adding pieces at the deadline would have increased those chances, but Correa’s comments are a good reminder to take a step back and appreciate just how good this team has been — and how much better it can get.
