If the Minnesota Twins are going to remain afloat in the American League Wild-Card race, it would seem that two things would need to happen. The first being that the starting rotation needs to find stable ground after the injuries to Pablo Lopez and Zebby Matthews. Beyond that, the Twins have a third base problem, and it was only emphasized by Royce Lewis' injury.

With speculation that the Twins could be in the market for a third baseman ahead of the trade deadline, Twins fans are beginning to scour the market for available options. Some options, like Ryan McMahon of the Colorado Rockies, can likely be ruled out for the Twins, considering the contractual obligations beyond this season. Other options like Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks can also likely be ruled out, given the interest that is surely to arrive from the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.

If the Twins are going to make an addition at third base, it likely won't be for a player who moves the needle in a considerable amount, but still represents an upgrade at the position. A player like Ramon Urias of the Baltimore Orioles makes a ton of sense for the Twins. Another player who could be a fit is Jake Burger of the Texas Rangers.

Twins could target a sneaky third baseman insiders say is now available

The Athletic recently released their big board for the deadline, and Burger made an appearance. It was a list of the top 30 players most likely to be moved, and Burger made an appearance at No. 21, three spots ahead of Yoan Moncada, who also may quietly be a fit for the type of move the Twins are looking for this season.

Burger's 2025 season with the Rangers included a reset where he was sent to the minor leagues to refine his offensive approach. Since May 12, his return to the Rangers, Burger has been the power hitter that fans have come to expect. In 130 plate appearances since his recall, Burger has 7 home runs with a 108 wRC+.

If the Twins are going to be in the market for a third baseman, while not making a big buy, they should target someone who can also bring power to their lineup. Burger would check that box. Not to mention, the Twins would still hold control over Burger until 2029.
