Minnesota Twins fans received word of some changes being made to the team next year, just not the kind that we've all been waiting to hear about. Rather than the roster being shuffled -- or added to, which is the dream -- it's the Twins' schedule for this upcoming season that has been altered.
It's a bit of an odd situation, one that doesn't normall pop up but is based around a pretty unprecedented situation. The Tampa Bay Rays will be playing their games at George M. Steinbrenner Stadium next year after Hurricane Milton caused catastrophic damage to Tropicana Field.
There's a bunch of other stadium drama that is now stemming from this whole situation, but the ripple effects of the move have reached all the up to Minnesota.
It was announced on Monday that MLB had altered the Rays schedule, and therefore the schedule of the teams Tampa Bay plays. One of those teams is the Twins and the league has switched home series between Minnesota and Tampa Bay that actually works out pretty great for fans.
MLB alters Twins schedule in 2025 due to Rays needing to move stadiums
The Twins will play in Tampa from May 26-28, while the Rays will come up to Target Field for a Fourth of July series later in the year.
This means Twins fans can celebrate Foruth of July at Target Field, a tradition that remains one of the more special days to take in a baseball game at the ballpark. It's also something that helps the team avoid the Florida heat and humidity in the peak of summer, something that Rays players will probably appreciate as well.
All of this stems from the Rays being unable to play their games at Tropicana Field, which has created some drama as far as where the team will play its games beyond next season. Using a Spring Training field isn't ideal, but Tampa Bay has been trying to get a new stadium for a while and the destruction of the one they currently play in hasn't been enough to spur any movement.
There's a bunch of politics behind all of this, but the only thing that really impacts the Twins is the series swap happening next summer. If the Rays remain at George M. Steinbrenner Stadium beyond 2025, we could see another alteration to Minnesota's schedule.
Playing at George M. Steinbrenner Stadium will be the second time the Twins play at a venue that's feels a little off from what we're used to. Minnesota plays a series against the A's at hte beginning of June that will take place at Sutter Health Park in Sacremento thanks to the team abandoning Oakland without a stadium to play in.
Twins fans remember the anxiety and drama surrounding the move out of the Metrodome over a decade ago, so it's hard to not sympathize with A's and Rays fans who are caught in the middle.
