Twins fans experiencing familiar downturn as hot streak abruptly comes to an end

An early-season hot streak followed by a rough stretch is a familiar pattern for the Twins.

Less than two weeks ago, the Minnesota Twins held the best record in the American League (11-7) after winning eight of nine games. Twins fans were widely pessimistic entering the season, but Minnesota's hot streak gave the fanbase a brief period of hope. Unfortunately, that hope didn't last long. After winning eight of nine games, the Twins have lost seven of eight games, lowering their record to 12-14.

An early-season hot streak followed by a rough stretch is a pattern that Twins fans are all too familiar with. Minnesota began the 2025 season with a 13-20 record before winning 13 games in a row, then went 44-72 the rest of the year. The Trade Deadline fire sale in July, where the Twins traded nearly 40% of their 26-man roster, is a big reason for the club's awful finish to the season. Still, Minnesota wouldn't have traded away so many players if it were in a better spot in the standings. On the day the Twins shockingly traded 10 players from their active roster, the team held a poor 51-57 record.

Minnesota also had a 12-game winning streak from late April to early May 2024. The club ended the season with a winning record (82-80) but failed to make the postseason despite holding a 95.4% chance to make the playoffs on Sept. 5 of that year, according to FanGraphs.

Winning eight of nine games obviously isn't as impressive as 12 and 13-game winning streaks, but it sure comes close. The Twins' recent rough stretch could mark the third straight season in which the team gave fans hope early but ultimately disappointed. While Minnesota still has plenty of time to turn things around this year, it's difficult for fans to feel optimistic given the club's results from the last two seasons.

It's still worth watching Twins games despite rough stretch

The Twins have plenty of young talent, giving fans a reason to be optimistic about the team's future. But it's still difficult to imagine the team will make the postseason this year. And even if the Twins manage to sneak into the playoffs, it feels unlikely they'll make a deep run. However, it's certainly still worth watching the club and holding onto hope. FanGraphs gives the Twins a 31.8% chance to make the playoffs, while PECOTA gives the team a 22.5% chance. And even if the team is in a bad spot in the standings later in the season, the club's young talent will be worth keeping an eye on.
