Chris Paddack's first start with the Miami Marlins could've been better.
That's the nice way of putting it.
Former Twin Chris Paddack has rough first outing with Marlins
Paddack made his first start for the Marlins against the Chicago White Sox at LoanDepot Park in Miami on Monday after signing a one-year, $4 million contract with the club during the offseason. He looked great during the first two innings of the game, allowing zero baserunners with three strikeouts. Then it all went downhill.
In the top of the third inning, Paddack surrendered a leadoff double to Everson Pereira. The former Twin got the next two batters out, but then allowed back-to-back singles and a three-run home run from Austin Hays, respectively, making the score 4-0 in Chicago's favor. He allowed another single before Lenyn Sosa grounded out to end the top half of the inning.

Somehow, the fourth inning was just as bad as the third for Paddack. He allowed two singles to begin the inning, then hit Luisangel Acuña with a pitch after Edgar Quero laid down a sacrifice bunt. Miguel Vargas proceeded to crush a grand slam. Paddack struck out Munetaka Murakami and Hays to end the frame and his outing. Paddack allowed eight hits during the game.

The White Sox won the game 9-4, giving Paddack a 0-1 record on the season. The former Twins righty has an awful 18.00 ERA after the start.
Most Twins fans probably aren't surprised about the results from Paddack's first outing.
The Twins acquired Paddack from the San Diego Padres on Opening Day 2022. He made just five starts in his first season with Minnesota before having to undergo his second Tommy John Surgery. He returned to big-league action as a reliever at the end of the 2023 season, making two regular-season relief appearances before making another two during the postseason. During the 2023 ALDS against the Houston Astros, the righty pitched 1 1/3 perfect innings during Game 1 and 2 1/3 scoreless innings during Game 4.
In 2024, Paddack suffered another brutal injury, a forearm strain, limiting him to 17 starts in which he posted a 4.99 ERA in 88 1/3 innings. He finally had a healthy season in 2025, but he struggled with a 4.95 ERA in 111 innings across 21 starts before being traded, along with right-handed pitcher Randy Dobnak, to the Detroit Tigers in late July for catching prospect Enrique Jimenez.
The Tigers didn't get what they wanted out of Paddack, as the ex-Twin had an awful 6.32 ERA in 47 innings with Detroit last season. The Tigers moved him to their bullpen near the end of the season, and he failed to crack Detroit's playoff roster due to his significant struggles.
While we're all wishing Paddack the best, we Twins fans should be happy he's with another team.
