It's not that Twins fans expected their favorite players to receive any award, but some semblance of respect was deserved for a few guys.
This past week, the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA) unveiled their 2025 MLB awards. Byron Buxton, who won a Silver Slugger Award, placed 11th in the American League MVP race. It's nice that he received some votes, but he deserved much better than that. But that's not exactly why we're here.
Joe Ryan did not receive a single vote for the Cy Young Award, which is a bit ludicrious considering his solid season. Should he have won the award? Absolutely not. Should he have been a Top 5 finisher? Also no. But, Ryan's output in 2025 was definitely enough for him to be somewhere on the list. Instead, he wasn't given a single vote. Major bummer.
Here's a breakdown of Joe Ryan's numbers in 2025 and where it ranked among other American League pitchers. Bold and italicized numbers indicate a career-best metric for Ryan.
- WAR: 4.5 (6th)
- ERA: 3.42 (10th)
- Strikeouts: 194 (6th)
- ERA+: 125 (8th)
- WHIP: 1.035 (6th)
- Wins: 13 (T-6th)
- K/9: 10.2 (3rd)
Ryan was a Top 10 pitcher in the American League in several metrics, and yet, he is nowhere to be found in the Cy Young vote. He also posted 14 quality starts. Every time he lasted six or more innings, it went for a quality start, which signified long-term success. It wasn't just him out there eating innings.
Shout out to Pitching Ninja, though. Rob Friedman gave Joe Ryan an award thanks to his nasty breaking ball. Pitching Ninja gave Ryan the "Sweeper of the Year Award" thanks to a wild 30.5-inch horizontal break to get the strikeout.

Hopefully, Ryan sticks with the Twins for another season. He was a first-time All-Star in 2025 and we can only wish that he racks up more recognition in Minnesota. He deserves it.
