Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Chris Paddack is on the verge of joining his third team of the year, which tells you everything you need to know about how the right-hander's season is going. According to Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News, the Texas Rangers are close to signing Paddack to a major-league contract.
Paddack never lived up to expectations during his Twins tenure after joining the team in 2022 as part of the trade that sent the San Diego Padres Taylor Rogers and Brent Rooker. He made just five starts in 2022 before undergoing Tommy John Surgery, then pitched out of the bullpen in late 2023. He was limited to just 17 starts in 2024 due to a forearm strain, posting a 4.99 ERA across 88 1/3 innings.
Paddack had a solid start to the 2025 season but cooled down significantly. He had a 4.95 ERA in 111 innings last season before being traded to the Detroit Tigers along with righty Randy Dobnak for catching prospect Enrique Jimenez in late July. Paddack continued to struggle with Detroit, posting a 6.32 ERA over 47 innings. The Tigers demoted Paddack to a bullpen role near the end of the season, and he failed to make Detroit's postseason roster.
The Miami Marlins signed Paddack to a one-year, $4 million deal in the offseason, and then designated the right-hander for assignment after he posted a 7.63 ERA over 30 2/3 innings. Three days after being released by the Marlins on May 10, Paddack signed a deal with the Cincinnati Reds. He only lasted about five weeks with the Reds before being DFA'd on June 22 and released two days later. He recorded a 6.04 ERA over 22 1/3 innings with Cincinnati.
What will former Twin Chris Paddack's role be with Rangers?
The Rangers are in desperate need of pitching help after right-handed starter Jack Leiter underwent an arthroscopic surgery to remove a loose body in his right ankle region, according to MLB.com's Kennedi Landry. Texas is waiting on Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bradford to fully recover from their UCL surgeries. Until then, Paddack will get starting opportunities for the Rangers. Right now, Montgomery is on a minor-league rehab assignment while Bradford is throwing but hasn't begun a rehab assignment yet.
How Paddack performs with Texas has a good chance of affecting the playoff race. Despite being .500 with a 42-42 record, the Rangers are somehow in first place in the AL West.
