The Philadelphia Phillies were interested in former Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora for their manager job. Cora didn't want to work for Philadelphia, so the Phillies brought back Don Mattingly, who served as Philadelphia's interim manager this past season after the team fired Rob Thomson. The Phillies may not have landed Cora, but they hired Cora's former hitting coach with Boston, Peter Fatse, as their new hitting coach, according to The Athletic's Charlotte Varnes.

Former Twins coach Peter Fatse has new job after being fired by Red Sox

Fatse, 39, began his professional coaching career with the Minnesota Twins in 2019 as their minor league hitting coordinator. He coached for the team for only one season before joining the Red Sox as assistant hitting coach in 2020. After two years in the role, Fatse was promoted to hitting coach, a role he held until the Red Sox fired him, manager Alex Cora and four other coaches last April.

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted Fatse in the 24th round of the 2009 amateur draft out of the University of Connecticut. He played in the Brewers organization through 2010 and then moved to the independent leagues in 2011. He played independent ball through 2012.

In 2010, Fatse founded his own baseball academy in Palmer, Mass. Before joining the Twins in 2019, Fatse had no prior professional coaching experience.

During Fatse's time as the Twins' minor league hitting coordinator, Minnesota's seven affiliates averaged 4.51 runs per game with a .243/.324/.384 slash line. The Triple-A Rochester Red Wings had the most offensive success of the affiliates, hitting .278/.350/.461 with 174 home runs and averaging 5.64 runs per game.

During Fatse's time as the Red Sox's hitting coach, Boston ranked seventh in runs (3156) and 13th in wRC+ (103). The team did not make the playoffs in his first three years (2022-24) as hitting coach before reaching the postseason in 2025.

One has to wonder if the Phillies hired Fatse with the hope that it could eventually convince Cora to take the manager job. Mattingly is under contract only for the next two years, and teams often fire managers mid-contract. For example, the Twins exercised Rocco Baldelli's club option for 2026 early in the 2025 season but still fired him at season's end. Mattingly's job appears to be safe for next season, but the door is open for Philadelphia to fire him next offseason if Cora ends up interested in returning to managing.
