San Francisco Giants expected to show trade interest in former Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Sonny Gray, who is now with St. Louis Cardinals, this winter

With Logan Webb and Robbie Ray the only two pitchers locked into their starting rotation next season, the San Francisco Giants are expected to show interest in Cardinals ace Sonny Gray this winter, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser.

The St. Louis Cardinals, who signed Gray to a three-year contract worth $75MM in the 2023-24 offseason, have had an overall disappointing 2025 season thus far, posting a 72-73 win-loss record. St. Louis still remains in the National League Wild Card hunt, trailing the New York Mets by 4 1/2 games for the third and final NL Wild Card spot, but with less than a month left in the regular season, the Cardinals will most likely be watching the playoffs from home this year. Since the Cardinals still owe Gray, 35, $25MM next season, the organization will likely want to bolster its farm system in a trade involving the former Twins ace, as making a playoff run next year is likely a long shot for St. Louis.

Gray was one of the key pieces of the Twins' 2023 playoff team, posting 5.4 fWAR and a 2.79 ERA (2.83 FIP) with a 24.3% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate in 184 innings en route to finishing second in American League Cy Young Award voting.

Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray has been solid since leaving the Twins

Gray hasn't been able to recreate his 2023 success since joining the Cardinals, but has nevertheless been a solid pitcher. In 2024, Gray posted 3.8 fWAR and a 3.84 ERA (3.12 FIP) with a 30.3% strikeout rate and 5.8% walk rate in 166 1/3 innings. Gray has struggled a bit in 2025, posting a 4.45 ERA, but has still managed a solid 3.48 FIP, 26.4% strikeout rate and 5.2% walk rate in 163 2/3 innings. He has a .323 BABIP (Batting Average on Balls in Play) this year, suggesting he has been unlucky on the mound and his numbers should be better overall in 2026.
