Former Minnesota Twins catcher Mickey Gasper has surprisingly broken out for the Boston Red Sox this season. Unfortunately, Gasper is unlikely to play in the American League Wild Card Series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium next week after suffering a right biceps injury in Friday afternoon's 4-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at Fenway Park. MassLive's Christopher Smith was the first to report that Gasper will likely miss the Wild Card Series.

The Twins acquired Gasper from the Red Sox for left-hander Jovani Moran on Dec. 24, 2024. Gasper spent much of the 2025 season with the Triple-A St. Paul Saints and hit just .158/.257/.232 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 110 plate appearances across 45 games with Minnesota last year.
Understandably, the Twins cut Gasper, 29 at the time, after the 2025 season by designating him for assignment. The Washington Nationals claimed Gasper off waivers from Minnesota only to designate him for assignment themselves less than two weeks later. The Red Sox reacquired Gasper via waivers from the Nationals.

Unexpectedly, Gasper has become a major contributor for the Red Sox this year. Boston kept him down in the minors for most of the season, but he's made the most of his opportunity in the majors, hitting .251/.357/.466 with 10 home runs and 24 RBI in 225 plate appearances across 67 games. Boston has recalled Gasper three times this season, most recently on Aug. 31.
It's a shame Gasper likely won't play in the Wild Card Series. There's also a strong chance he will miss the later rounds if Boston makes it past New York.
While Gasper has had an amazing breakout season, Twins fans shouldn't be too upset that their favorite team let him go. For one, Gasper may not have had as many opportunities to play with Minnesota. Also, it's not like Gasper did much to prove he can be a force at the plate in the big leagues until this season. He is now 30 and has appeared in just 125 MLB games in his career.
Gasper remains a pre-arbitration player through the next two seasons, so the Red Sox won't have to pay him much through 2028. He also has two minor-league options remaining, so Boston can move him back and forth between Triple-A Worcester and the majors next year if they want.
The Red Sox will finish their regular season with a game against the Cubs at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Sunday. The game was originally scheduled for Fenway Park, but inclement weather moved it to the home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
